Chapter 9: The Marriage Built on a Secret
I didn’t remember leaving the hospital.
I remembered Megan’s face.
I remembered the words.
*Derek already knew who you were.*
But after that…
Everything blurred.
The hallway.
The voices.
The footsteps around me.
All of it disappeared beneath one terrifying thought.
My marriage might not have started with love.
It might have started with a plan.
By the time I got back to Rachel’s house, the sun was rising.
A new day.
A new life.
But I felt like I had been thrown backward twelve years.
Rachel opened the door before I knocked.
She took one look at my face.
“What happened?””
I walked inside.
“Megan told me.””
Rachel froze.
“Told you what?””
I stared at her.
“That Derek knew my father.””
Her expression changed.
Not shock.
Recognition.
My heart sank.
“You knew.””
Rachel immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“You knew something.””
“Emma—”
“Everyone keeps doing this.””
My voice cracked.
“Everyone knows pieces of my life except me.””
Rachel looked devastated.
“I swear I didn’t know everything.””
“Then tell me what you did know.””
She looked away.
And that was enough.
“Rachel.””
She sat down.
Slowly.
“I knew Derek worked for Dad.””
The room became silent.
“How long?””
“Before you met him.””
My chest tightened.
“How did you know?””
“Mom found out.””
Again.
My mother.
The woman who had been gone for twelve years and somehow still knew more about my life than I did.
“She told you?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“A few months before she died.””
I stared at her.
“What else did she tell you?””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“She said Derek was not supposed to be near you.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
“She was worried.””
“Why?””
“Because she thought he had an agenda.””
The word hit me.
Agenda.
Not love.
Not fate.
Not coincidence.
Agenda.
“Rachel.””
She looked at me.
“I don’t know if Derek married you because of that.””
“But you suspected.””
“Yes.””
I sat down.
My body was exhausted.
My baby was due any day.
But my mind refused to stop.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Rachel cried.
“Because you loved him.””
“That doesn’t matter.””
“I thought it did.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
She nodded.
“You’re right.””
For once, someone didn’t defend themselves.
They just admitted it.
And somehow, that made the pain sharper.
“What did Mom know about Derek?””
Rachel looked at the wooden box.
“The letters weren’t everything.””
My heart sank.
“There’s more?””
“Yes.””
She stood and walked to the bookshelf.
Behind a row of old photo albums was a small envelope.
She handed it to me.
“This was hidden.””
I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
My mother’s handwriting.
The date was two days before she died.
*Emma, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.*
My hands shook.
I continued.
*I need you to know that Derek Collins did not enter your life by accident.*
I stopped.
Rachel watched me.
I forced myself to keep reading.
*Years ago, your father trusted Derek. He trusted him with our family. I thought he was a good young man. I was wrong.*
My breathing became uneven.
*Derek knows things about your father that he has never told you. Things about the hospital. Things about Lauren. Things about the child.*
The child.
Again.
*I tried to confront him. He told me he loved Emma.*
My heart hurt.
Because even my mother had heard the same words.
He loved me.
*But love does not erase deception.*
I swallowed.
The next line made my fingers go cold.
*If Derek marries Emma, I fear he is not choosing her. He is choosing what she represents.*
I stopped reading.
“What she represents?””
Rachel whispered:
“I never understood that part.””
I looked at the letter again.
My mother had.
She had understood.
And she had been trying to warn me.
I read the final lines.
*Emma deserves someone who chooses her for herself. Not because of her name. Not because of her family. Not because of something she inherited.*
I folded the paper.
My hands were shaking.
My phone buzzed.
Derek.
Again.
This time, I answered.
Rachel looked at me.
“Emma?””
I put the phone to my ear.
“Hello.””
There was silence.
Then his voice.
“Where are you?””
Not hello.
Not are you okay.
Not how is the baby.
Just control.
“Why?””
“Because we need to talk.””
“We do.””
He sounded relieved.
“Good.””
A pause.
“Come home.””
I almost laughed.
Home.
That word didn’t mean the same thing anymore.
“Derek.””
“Yes?””
“Did you marry me because of my father?””
Silence.
Complete silence.
And that was the answer.
My eyes filled.
“Derek.””
“I can explain.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“I’m done with explanations.””
“Emma, please.””
“Did you know who I was when we met?””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
I sat completely still.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Your father.””
My stomach tightened.
“Tell me everything.””
“Not over the phone.””
“Why?””
“Because this is complicated.””
I looked at Rachel.
She was crying silently.
“Everything with you is complicated.””
“Emma—”
“No.””
I stood.
“You don’t get to ask me for patience anymore.””
“Please listen.””
“I spent years listening.””
My voice broke.
“I listened when you said you were busy.””
I wiped my face.
“I listened when you said I was emotional.””
I looked at the hospital bag sitting near the door.
“I listened when you left me alone in labor.””
“Emma, I’m sorry.””
There it was.
Again.
The word that arrived too late.
“What did you want from me?””
Silence.
Then:
“I wanted to protect you.””
I closed my eyes.
“From what?””
“My father.””
I froze.
“Your father?””
“Yes.””
I sat down.
“What does my father have to do with this?””
Derek’s voice became lower.
“Your father wasn’t the man you thought he was.””
I felt a chill.
“Don’t.””
“What?””
“Don’t rewrite my entire life because you’re afraid.””
“I’m telling the truth.””
“You have lied to me for years.””
“I know.””
“Then why should I believe you now?””
He had no answer.
For once.
No excuse.
No explanation.
Just silence.
“Derek.””
“Yes?””
“Did you love me?””
The question escaped before I could stop it.
A part of me hated that I asked.
A part of me needed to know.
His answer came quietly.
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then why?””
“Because when I met you, I knew you were different.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It is.””
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“That’s a line.””
He breathed out.
“When I first met you, I thought you were just your father’s daughter.””
The words hurt.
“But then I got to know you.””
“And?””
“And I fell in love with you.””
I looked at Rachel.
She looked broken.
“Was the beginning fake?””
Derek didn’t answer immediately.
Finally:
“At first…”
My heart sank.
“At first what?””
“At first I was trying to understand your family.””
My hands trembled.
“And then?””
“Then I loved you.””
I stared at the wall.
Because that was somehow worse.
A fake beginning.
A real middle.
A destroyed ending.
“Derek.””
“Yes?””
“I’m having this baby without you.””
“Emma, no.””
“I already did.””
The line went quiet.
“You chose not to be there.””
“I was scared.””
“You were selfish.””
“I know.””
“And I will never let our daughter grow up wondering if she was worth showing up for.””
“Emma…”
I hung up.
Immediately.
Before he could say anything else.
Before another excuse could reach me.
For the first time in days, the silence felt peaceful.
Then Rachel’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
“Who is it?””
She swallowed.
“Derek.””
“Don’t answer.””
“I have to.””
“No.””
But she already had.
She put it on speaker.
Derek’s voice filled the room.
“Rachel, she knows.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Yes.””
“I need you to tell her the rest.””
My stomach tightened.
“What rest?””
Silence.
Then Derek said:
“The truth about your mother’s death.””
Rachel’s face went pale.
I stood up.
“What?””
Derek continued.
“She didn’t die because of a car accident.””
My blood ran cold.
“What are you saying?””
The line went silent.
Then Derek said the words that changed everything.
“She was on her way to meet me.””
I couldn’t breathe.
Rachel covered her mouth.
And Derek whispered:
“Emma… your mother died because she found out what I did.””
The call ended.
I stood there frozen.
Because after all the lies.
All the secrets.
All the betrayal.
There was one truth left.
May you like
The truth about the night my mother died.
And I was finally ready to hear it.
