Chapter 5: The Name He Buried

The woman closed the door behind her.

Nobody spoke.

She looked about sixty, maybe early sixties, wearing a dark coat despite the mild weather.

Her hair was silver.

Her posture was straight.

And she had the kind of face that seemed familiar before you knew why.

I looked at Laura.

“You know her?””

Laura shook her head.

The woman gave a faint smile.

“She doesn't.””

I looked back at her.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Evelyn Parker.””

My chest tightened.

My mother's name was Evelyn Bennett.

I stared.

“That isn't possible.””

She glanced at Laura.

“You didn't tell him?””

Laura whispered, “I was trying to.””

The woman looked at me.

“Your mother isn't the only Evelyn who was involved.””

I took a step back.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the photograph.

Then she said,

“Your father took something from me.””

I tightened my grip on the picture.

“Money?””

She nodded.

“And much more.””

Laura moved toward her.

“Evelyn, you can't be here.””

The woman turned.

“Neither can your trainer.””

Laura went silent.

I looked between them.

“You know Jason?””

“I know what Jason is doing.””

“And what is he doing?””

“Finishing what your father started.””

My blood ran cold.

I stepped closer.

“What did my father start?””

She looked directly into my eyes.

“A lie.””

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a thick envelope.

She put it on the table.

I didn't touch it.

“What's inside?””

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

“Of where the money went.””

I stared at the envelope.

“You said my father stole it.””

“He did.””

“Why would he?””

She gave a small, bitter laugh.

“Because he believed he could control everyone around him.””

That sounded like the father I remembered.

Successful.

Confident.

Always three steps ahead.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a bank statement.

Then another.

Then a legal agreement.

At the bottom of the agreement was my father's signature.

My hands began to shake.

The account number matched the one on Laura's hidden documents.

I looked up.

“Where did you get these?””

“My husband found them before he died.””

“Your husband?””

She nodded.

“My name was never the important part.””

I glanced at Laura.

She looked terrified.

“Why is Laura involved?””

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“Because Jason found the same records.””

“So this entire thing…”

“Was never really about the gym.””

I stared at Laura.

She couldn't meet my eyes.

Evelyn continued.

“Jason knew the assets were still connected to your father's old company. He needed someone close to you.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“You're saying Laura married me for my father's money?””

Laura started crying.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“You may not have married him for that reason.””

Laura nodded through tears.

“But once you discovered what his father left behind, you changed your mind.””

Laura whispered,

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“That I would lose everything.””

I looked at her.

“You already did.””

She covered her mouth.

I turned back to Evelyn.

“What exactly is in that transfer?””

She opened the agreement again.

“Your house.””

“I know.””

“Your investment accounts.””

“I know.””

“And a dormant account your father created under another beneficiary.””

I froze.

“What beneficiary?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“You.””

I frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It does when you know why.””

She pulled out another page.

There was an account number.

Then a beneficiary designation.

Then a name.

Not Mark Bennett.

Another name.

*Michael Parker.*

I stared.

“Who is Michael Parker?””

Evelyn didn't answer immediately.

Then she said,

“My son.””

Silence filled the room.

I looked from her to Laura.

“Why would my father leave money to your son?””

Evelyn's eyes became wet.

“Because Michael was his son too.””

I couldn't move.

Laura whispered my name.

I barely heard her.

“My father's son?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Your half-brother.””

The room seemed to shrink around me.

For years, I had believed I was my father's only child.

For years, every birthday, every inheritance conversation, every family story had been built around one simple fact.

Me.

His son.

His heir.

His only child.

I looked down at the photograph again.

The woman standing beside my father.

The note.

The hidden company.

The secret account.

It all suddenly made sense in the worst possible way.

“My father had another family.””

“He had another life,” Evelyn said.

I stared at her.

“Where is Michael?””

Her expression changed.

And that was when I knew the answer was not simple.

“He disappeared.””

“When?””

“Eight years ago.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Why?””

“Because he found the records your father buried.””

Laura suddenly spoke.

“Jason didn't know that part.””

Evelyn turned to her.

“Oh, Jason knows.””

Laura's face went pale.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“He found Michael.””

I stepped forward.

“Where?””

She held my gaze.

Then she said the one thing I wasn't prepared to hear.

“He's the person who's been texting you from the unknown number.””

My phone vibrated in my pocket.

I pulled it out.

One new message.

Unknown number.

*DON'T TRUST LAURA. DON'T TRUST JASON.*

Then another message appeared.

*AND WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T LET THEM COMPLETE THE TRANSFER TOMORROW.*

I looked up at Evelyn.

“Who is Michael Parker?””

She stared at my phone.

May you like

Then quietly said,

“The man standing outside your house.””
