Chapter 4: The Uncle Who Knew Too Much

For several seconds, nobody moved.

My father's younger brother had helped my stepmother steal my savings.

The same uncle who had hugged me at my mother's funeral. The same man who had slipped me twenty dollars every Christmas and told me to save it for something important. The same man who had once sat beside me at the kitchen table, helping me calculate how much money I would need for college.

I remembered him pointing at my notebook.

"Every dollar you save today gives you another choice tomorrow, Emma.""

I had believed him.

Now I wondered whether he had been looking at my savings account while he said it.

My father took one slow step toward Tyler.

"Say that again.""

Tyler swallowed.

"Uncle Michael told Mom how to get the money.""

"How?""

"I don't know all the details.""

"Then start with what you know.""

Tyler looked at Laura, silently begging her to intervene.

She remained in her chair, her face buried in her hands.

"Tyler," Dad said, "your uncle helped your mother take thirty thousand dollars from your stepsister. You just told me he knew how to do it. If you have any information, now is the time to give it to me.""

Tyler dragged both hands down his face.

"It started when Mom found out about my gambling debts.""

"When was that?""

"Last fall.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"Last fall? You let this go on for a year?""

"I was scared!""

"So was Emma when she found out someone had emptied her account!""

Tyler flinched.

I sat very still at the table.

Part of me wanted to scream at him. Another part wanted to disappear. The people who had stolen my money were people I had trusted, people who had eaten dinner at our table and asked me about school while knowing what they were doing.

It was difficult to decide which hurt more.

Tyler pulled a chair back and sat again.

"Mom found out I owed money after one of the guys started calling the house. I told her I had everything under control, but I didn't. I was losing more every week.""

"And you went to Michael?"" Dad asked.

"No. Mom did.""

Laura finally raised her head.

"I was trying to protect my son.""

Dad looked at her with disbelief.

"From the consequences of his own decisions?""

"From people who were threatening him!""

"You could have come to me.""

"You would have thrown him out!""

"I would have gotten him help!""

Laura shook her head.

"You don't understand what it's like to watch your child destroy his life.""

I felt something inside me snap.

"What about my life?""

Laura looked at me.

"What?""

"You watched me work every weekend. You watched me save money for college. You knew I needed treatment for my eyes. Didn't you think about what would happen to me?""

She opened her mouth, then looked away.

That was the answer.

Dad pulled out his phone and opened the banking records again.

"How did Michael access the account?""

Tyler rubbed his palms against his jeans.

"Mom said he knew someone who could help her move the money.""

"Move it where?""

"I don't know.""

"Did he use your mother's phone?""

"I think so.""

Dad turned toward Laura.

"Did Michael have access to your phone?""

Laura stared at the table.

"Sometimes.""

"Did you give him Emma's banking information?""

She shook her head.

Dad waited.

Finally, she whispered, "I gave him the account number.""

My heart hammered against my ribs.

"You gave Uncle Michael my account number?""

"I didn't think he could do anything with it!""

"Then why did you give it to him?"" I demanded.

Laura's eyes filled with tears again.

"Because he said he could help me.""

"Help you steal from me?""

"He said we could borrow the money, cover Tyler's debts, and put everything back before you noticed.""

Dad's voice became dangerously quiet.

"How much did Michael take?""

"I don't know.""

"Stop saying that.""

"I swear, Daniel, I don't know the total!""

Dad turned away and pressed a hand against his forehead.

For a moment, he looked older than I had ever seen him.

Then he walked to the living room and returned with a folder from his desk.

"What is that?"" Laura asked.

"Something I should have checked a long time ago.""

He opened the folder on the kitchen table.

Inside were copies of household financial statements, mortgage documents, and a few letters from the bank.

Dad pointed to a page dated eleven months earlier.

"Do you recognize this?""

Laura stared at it.

Her lips parted.

"Daniel, I can explain.""

"That's a transfer from our joint savings account. Five thousand dollars. The money was supposed to cover the roof repairs.""

He turned another page.

"Here's another one. Three thousand dollars, withdrawn two weeks later.""

Laura began shaking her head.

"That was different.""

"How?""

"I needed to pay some bills.""

"Which bills?""

She couldn't answer.

Dad placed another statement beside the others.

"And this is a transfer to Michael.""

The amount was $6,500.

I looked at my father.

"You've been losing money too?""

He nodded slowly.

"I thought we were spending more than usual. Laura said the house repairs had cost extra. Then she said insurance premiums had gone up. I believed her.""

Laura wiped her face.

"You never asked to see the receipts.""

Dad stared at her.

"Because I trusted you.""

The words were quiet, but they seemed to fill the entire kitchen.

For the first time, Laura looked genuinely ashamed.

She reached toward him.

"Daniel, please. We can fix this.""

He stepped away.

"How?""

"I'll sell some things. I'll get a job. I'll pay Emma back.""

"With what money? You have been taking money from us for nearly a year.""

"I can make it right.""

Dad pointed at the mortgage documents.

"You pledged our house to support a car loan I never approved. You gave our daughter's banking information to my brother. You lied about household expenses. And you expect me to believe that a promise will fix this?""

Laura's shoulders shook.

"I didn't know what else to do.""

"Tell the truth.""

"I couldn't!""

"Why?""

She looked at Tyler.

Then at me.

Then back at my father.

"Because Michael told me what would happen if I did.""

Dad went still.

"What did he threaten you with?""

Laura's face crumpled.

"He said he'd expose everything.""

"Expose what?""

She pressed the tissue against her mouth.

"I can't.""

Dad pushed the papers away.

"Then we're done talking until you can.""

He picked up his phone and called the bank.

I watched him explain that his daughter's account had unauthorized withdrawals, that his household funds might also have been misappropriated, and that he needed to secure every account connected to his financial information.

He asked for new passwords, restrictions on transfers, and instructions for formally disputing the transactions.

When the call ended, he turned to me.

"Emma, I need you to contact your specialist. Tell them we're arranging payment and ask what we can do to keep your treatment on schedule.""

I nodded, although my eyes were burning.

"Okay.""

"I'll cover the immediate medical costs myself. Your treatment isn't going to wait while we sort this out.""

For the first time that morning, I felt my chest loosen.

"Thank you, Dad.""

He squeezed my shoulder.

"You never should have had to ask.""

Then his phone rang.

The screen displayed a name that made all the color disappear from his face.

Michael Carter.

My uncle was calling him.

Dad stared at the phone until it nearly stopped ringing.

Then he answered and switched on the speaker.

"Michael.""

My uncle's cheerful voice filled the kitchen.

"Hey, Danny. You got a minute? I wanted to check on that little financial situation we discussed.""

Dad's eyes moved toward Laura.

"What financial situation?""

There was a pause.

Then Michael laughed nervously.

"Come on, man. Don't tell me Laura hasn't explained.""

"She has explained quite a lot.""

"Listen, I know things got a little messy, but we can straighten everything out.""

Dad's fingers tightened around the phone.

"Did you help Laura access Emma's savings account?""

Silence.

Not a confused silence.

Not the silence of someone who had been accused of something ridiculous.

The silence of a man choosing his next lie.

Finally, Michael said, "I think you've misunderstood what happened.""

Dad closed his eyes briefly.

"Did you help her take my daughter's money?""

Michael exhaled.

"Daniel, let's not do this over the phone.""

"Why?""

"Because there are things you don't know.""

"Then tell me.""

"I can't.""

Dad leaned closer to the phone.

"Did you receive five thousand dollars from Emma's account six days ago?""

Michael didn't answer.

Then, in a voice that had lost every trace of warmth, he said, "Ask Laura what she promised me.""

The call ended.

Dad stared at the phone.

Laura began sobbing again.

Tyler stood and backed away from the table.

I looked between them, trying to understand what kind of secret could make my uncle help steal from his own niece and then threaten the woman who had helped him do it.

Dad slowly turned toward Laura.

"What did you promise my brother?""

She shook her head.

"Nothing.""

He placed the phone on the table.

"Then why is he collecting money from Emma?""

Laura's lips trembled.

May you like

And after a long, painful silence, she whispered the words that made my father sit down.

"Because the money wasn't supposed to be for Tyler's debts.""
