Chapter 4: The Document They Needed Me to Sign

I had spent most of my adult life believing that a mother's love could survive almost anything.

I had survived my husband's death, years of financial hardship, and the lonely nights when Daniel was growing up and I was too exhausted to do anything except heat a can of soup and fall asleep at the kitchen table.

I had survived all of that because I believed the sacrifices meant something.

Now, standing outside the ballroom where my only son was about to get married, I wondered whether love had made me blind to the man he was becoming.

Chloe was waiting in the service stairwell, exactly where she had promised to be.

She was sitting on the bottom step, still wearing her pale pink bridesmaid dress. Her bouquet lay beside her, crushed beneath one trembling hand.

When she saw me, she jumped to her feet.

“Mrs. Bennett, I didn't know who else to call.””

“Margaret,” I corrected gently.

“You can call me Margaret.””

She nodded, but her eyes filled with tears.

“I should have told you earlier.””

“Why didn't you?””

“Because Jessica is my best friend. Or she was.”” Chloe wiped her cheeks.

“I've known her since college. I've seen her lie about small things, but I never thought she'd do something like this.””

I sat beside her.

“Tell me what happened last night.””

Chloe looked toward the stairwell door before answering.

“Jessica was in her hotel room with her father. I went looking for her because we were supposed to review the ceremony schedule. The door was partly open, and I heard them arguing.””

“About the trust?””

“Yes. Richard said the wedding had to happen before the end of the month because of some deadline. Jessica said you would never sign the documents voluntarily.””

My fingers tightened around my handbag.

“What documents?””

“She called them financial authorization papers. She said Daniel had already agreed that you were the only obstacle.””

I remembered the phone call Daniel had made to me three weeks earlier.

He had asked whether I still had the original trust paperwork from his father's estate.

At the time, I thought he was simply updating his financial records.

I had told him the documents were in my home safe, alongside my husband's will and the insurance policy.

He had sounded relieved.

Now I wondered whether he had been checking what I possessed.

“Did you hear Richard say anything else?”” I asked.

Chloe nodded.

“He said, 'If she refuses, we'll make sure Daniel believes she's doing it out of spite.''”

The words landed like stones.

I could hear Richard saying them in the same calm voice he had used at dinner, when he praised me for raising a good son.

Chloe reached into the small purse hanging from her wrist.

“I saved this.””

She handed me her phone.

On the screen was a series of text messages between Jessica and Richard.

The first was from Jessica, sent shortly after midnight.

She'll bring the necklace tomorrow. She wants Daniel to see her as the generous mother.

Richard had replied:

Good. Let her think she's helping.

Another message followed.

What if she won't sign?

His answer was brief.

Then we use the other plan. Daniel has to believe she's trying to sabotage the marriage.

I read the messages twice.

The necklace had never been the point.

My gift had been an opportunity.

Jessica had known I would bring it because I had told Daniel about the heirloom during our last Sunday dinner. She had also known that I wanted us to get along.

She had taken the one thing I hoped would bring us closer and turned it into a weapon.

“There's more,” Chloe whispered.

She opened an audio file.

“I recorded this last night because I couldn't believe what I was hearing.””

She pressed play.

At first, there was the muffled sound of a door closing.

Then Jessica's voice.

“I'm not spending the rest of my life asking his mother for permission.””

Richard answered, “You won't have to. Once Daniel has access to the money, you'll have enough to get the house you want and start the company.””

“What if she refuses to sign?””

“Then Daniel will pressure her.””

“And if she still refuses?””

Richard paused.

“People believe what they want to believe, sweetheart. If Daniel thinks his mother is trying to ruin his marriage, he'll do the rest for us.””

I stopped the recording.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

The plan was not simply to humiliate me.

They wanted Daniel to see me as an enemy, someone whose removal was necessary for his future. The accusation in the bridal suite had been designed to make that separation happen publicly and immediately.

But the recording revealed something more troubling.

They had expected Daniel to cooperate.

“Chloe,” I said, “why would they believe I could release money from a trust I don't control?””

“Jessica said you were listed as a trustee.””

“I was never a trustee.””

I had helped Daniel's attorney organize the original documents after my husband's death, but I had never been authorized to distribute the funds. The trust was administered by a licensed fiduciary, and its terms were clear.

Daniel could receive distributions for specific purposes, but the principal was protected.

Marriage alone did not release it.

“Did Jessica mention a specific amount?”” I asked.

Chloe nodded.

“She said Daniel's share was worth almost eight hundred thousand dollars.””

My stomach tightened.

The trust had grown over the years, but I had never discussed the current balance with Jessica.

Only Daniel and the trust administrator had the most recent statements.

“Did she say why she needed it so urgently?””

“She said Richard's company was in trouble. I heard her tell him that they needed the money before his lenders found out.””

I looked at Chloe.

“Did Daniel know about that?””

“I don't know how much he knew. But he knew they wanted money.””

I returned the phone to her.

“Thank you for telling me.””

She shook her head.

“You shouldn't thank me. I let her do this.””

“You're telling the truth now. That matters.””

A heavy knock sounded on the stairwell door.

We both froze.

“Chloe?”” a man's voice called.

“Are you in there?””

Richard.

Chloe's face drained of color.

“Open the door, sweetheart,” he called.

“We need to talk.””

I rose slowly.

“Stay behind me.””

“Margaret, you don't understand what he's like when he's angry.””

“Then it's a good thing I'm not afraid of angry men.””

I opened the door.

Richard stood on the other side in his immaculate charcoal suit, a white rose pinned to his lapel. His smile disappeared when he saw me.

For a fraction of a second, surprise crossed his face.

Then he recovered.

“Margaret. I was looking for Chloe.””

“I gathered that.””

His eyes moved to the phone in Chloe's hand.

“What are you doing with my daughter's messages?””

“Reading them.””

He straightened his cuffs.

“Those are private conversations. You have no right to interfere in my family's affairs.””

“Your family accused me of attacking your daughter.””

“Jessica was upset.””

“Your daughter tore her own wedding dress.””

His smile hardened.

“That's a serious accusation.””

“I watched the recording.””

Richard took a step into the stairwell.

“Then you should understand that emotions were running high. Surely you don't intend to make an unfortunate misunderstanding the centerpiece of Daniel's wedding.””

“An unfortunate misunderstanding?””

He looked at my cheek.

“I regret that Daniel lost his temper.””

“You regret that he did it in front of a camera.””

For the first time, Richard's expression changed in a way he couldn't completely hide.

Then he laughed softly.

“Margaret, you're a nurse, aren't you? You must understand that people make mistakes under stress.””

“I understand that some people use stress as an excuse to hurt others.””

His gaze sharpened.

“You need to be careful. Daniel has made his decision about where his future lies.””

“I know. He told me.””

“Then respect it.””

“I will. But I won't sign anything you or your daughter put in front of me.””

Richard's smile vanished.

He leaned closer, lowering his voice.

“You're making a mistake.””

“No, Richard. I made a mistake when I believed you.””

He stepped back.

For a moment, we stared at each other without speaking.

Then he turned to Chloe.

“Give me the phone.””

She clutched it to her chest.

“No.””

“Chloe.””

“I said no.””

His face flushed.

“You have no idea what you're getting involved in.””

“Neither did I last night,” she replied, her voice shaking.

“But I know what I heard.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

He looked at me one last time.

“Enjoy the wedding, Margaret.””

Then he walked away.

Chloe exhaled so forcefully that she nearly collapsed against the wall.

I took her hand.

“Are you all right?””

She nodded, although she was clearly frightened.

“I think we should give that recording to the authorities.””

“We will. But first, we need to make sure nobody can claim it was edited or taken out of context.””

I asked her to preserve the original messages and audio file, without altering them. Then I photographed the documents she had shown me, making sure to keep the date and sender information visible.

We would need to handle the evidence properly.

I wasn't going to let anger turn me into the person they were trying to portray.

As we reached the hallway, Chloe stopped.

“Margaret?””

“Yes?””

“There's something else I haven't told you.””

I waited.

“Jessica didn't just ask Daniel to pressure you.””

She looked toward the ballroom doors.

“She told him that if you refused to sign the papers, he should tell you something about your husband's estate.””

My heart began pounding.

“What?””

Chloe swallowed.

“She said you had lied to Daniel about where the original money went after his father died.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

May you like

Because there was one detail about Thomas's estate that Daniel had never fully understood.

And if Jessica had discovered it, she might have found a way to make her lie sound frighteningly believable.
