Chapter 7: The Secret That Could Destroy My Family

The phone continued ringing.

Nobody moved.

Holly stood beside the conference table, clutching the edge so tightly that her knuckles had turned white. Samuel Price stared at the screen. Michael Bennett had stopped halfway through reaching for his briefcase.

And I sat frozen, staring at the name of the man who had disappeared from my life twenty-nine years ago.

*DANIEL CARTER.*

“Answer it,” Holly whispered.

I looked at her.

“You said you spoke to him this morning.””

“I did.””

“What did he tell you?””

She swallowed.

“That everything was about to come out.””

The phone stopped ringing.

A second later, it began again.

This time, I answered.

“Daniel?””

A familiar voice came through the speaker.

“Ruth, are you alone?””

“No.””

“Who is with you?””

“Samuel Price, Michael Bennett, and your daughter-in-law.””

There was a long silence.

Then Daniel said, “Holly shouldn't be there.””

Holly leaned toward the phone.

“I had no choice! Victor knows about the missing money, Daniel. He's threatening Robert, and I can't keep pretending everything is fine!””

“Did you tell Ruth about the amendment?””

“Yes.””

“Then you've already done more damage than you understand.””

Holly's face crumpled.

“I was trying to save my family.””

“So was I,” Daniel replied.

I slammed my palm against the table.

“Stop talking around me!””

Silence fell.

I had spent twenty-nine years imagining what I would say if I ever heard my husband's voice again. I had imagined anger, accusations, tears, and a thousand questions.

I had never imagined having to fight for the right to speak.

“Daniel,” I said, my voice shaking, “you will answer me now. Where have you been? Why did you leave? And why am I learning about my own life from your daughter-in-law?””

He exhaled slowly.

“I'm in Texas.””

“Where in Texas?””

“About forty miles outside Dallas.””

“Then come home.””

“I can't.””

The words nearly broke me.

“Can't, or won't?””

“Ruth, I have people watching me.””

“Then let them watch! I'm tired of being afraid of people I don't even know!””

Daniel said nothing.

I continued, “You left me with a three-year-old boy. I worked until my hands bled. I spent years answering questions I couldn't explain. Robert grew up believing you didn't want him.””

“I know.””

“No, Daniel. You know the words. You don't know what it felt like.””

My voice cracked.

“I sat beside him when he cried for you. I lied to him on Christmas mornings because I didn't know how to tell a child that his father had vanished. I watched him grow into a man who now treats me like a stranger, and I have spent the last two days wondering whether I failed him.””

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel whispered, “You never failed him.””

I pressed my fingers against my eyes.

“Then why did you leave us?””

“Because someone was going to use Robert to force me to surrender the company.””

“Who?””

“I'll explain when we meet.””

“No. You will explain now.””

Daniel breathed heavily.

“Ruth, I discovered that Victor Hale was diverting money from our company into accounts I couldn't trace. When I confronted him, he threatened to destroy everything I had built.””

“And you ran away?””

“I thought I could gather enough evidence to stop him before he reached you.””

“You could have told me!””

“I was afraid.””

The honesty in his answer hurt more than any excuse.

“I was afraid he'd hurt you. I was afraid he'd take Robert. And I was afraid that if I stayed, I'd become the kind of man who traded his family for money.””

I looked at the album.

“You traded us for silence instead.””

Daniel made a broken sound.

“Yes.””

For the first time, he didn't defend himself.

He didn't tell me I misunderstood.

He didn't blame circumstances or insist that he had made the only possible choice.

He simply admitted it.

And somehow, that made the pain sharper.

“Daniel,” I whispered, “was Robert's father someone else?””

The room went completely still.

Holly covered her mouth.

Samuel lowered his eyes.

On the phone, Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

Then he answered.

“No.””

I stared at the screen.

“No?””

“Robert is my son, Ruth. Biologically and legally. I raised him.

I love him. Nothing about what happened before his birth changes that.””

“Then why would Holly say—”

“Because she's frightened and doesn't understand what she has found.””

Holly suddenly stood.

“That's not true!””

She snatched the phone from my hand.

“You told me there was another man, Daniel! You said Robert's birth certificate had been altered!””

Daniel's voice hardened.

“I said someone tried to alter it.””

Holly went pale.

I rose from my chair.

“What are you talking about?””

Holly put the phone on speaker.

“Victor gave me a copy of a document that said Robert's biological father was another man. He told me Daniel had hidden the truth from you because he wanted to control the inheritance.””

Daniel answered immediately.

“Victor lied.””

Holly shook her head.

“Then why did the document have a doctor's signature?””

“Because someone used an old medical file to create a fraudulent record. The original is in the envelope.””

I felt dizzy.

“Daniel, is there another man?””

“No. Robert is mine.””

His voice softened.

“Ruth, I swear to you.””

I wanted to believe him.

But after twenty-nine years, I understood that a promise could be sincere and still leave a person unprotected.

“Then we need a DNA test.””

Daniel was silent.

Finally, he said, “If that's what you need to believe me, I'll agree.””

I looked at Samuel.

He nodded slightly, reminding me that the documents still mattered more than our assumptions.

“Daniel,” I said, “I need to know what is in the sealed amendment.””

“It's the truth about the company, the money, and the people who helped Victor take control.””

“Does it name Robert?””

“Yes.””

“Does it name me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why haven't you sent it to a lawyer?””

“Because the amendment contains information that could put several people in prison. And one of those people has been working very hard to make sure it never sees daylight.””

Holly sank into a chair.

“Who?””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Your father.””

She stopped moving.

I stared at her.

“Holly's father?””

“Yes.””

Holly shook her head violently.

“My father died when I was twenty.””

“He didn't,” Daniel replied.

“He changed his name after the investigation began.””

Holly looked as though someone had struck her.

“No.””

“His real name is Richard Hale. He's Victor's older brother.””

The room fell silent.

Holly whispered, “My father was a mechanic. He never worked in finance.””

“He was a mechanic when he wanted people to believe he was one,” Daniel said.

“Before that, he helped Victor establish the network of companies used to move the money.””

Holly shook her head.

“No. My mother said he died in a car accident.””

“Your mother was protecting you.””

“From what?””

“From him.””

Holly began crying.

I looked at her, remembering the cold expression she had worn at Ethan's birthday party, the way she had dismissed me without hesitation.

I had thought her cruelty came from arrogance.

Now I wondered whether she had been living with secrets of her own.

But understanding her fear did not erase what she had done.

“You knew Victor was threatening Robert,” I said.

“You knew the documents might be fraudulent. Why did you try to sell the property anyway?””

Holly wiped her cheeks.

“Because I thought I could get out before everything collapsed.””

“You took money from the trust.””

“I was going to replace it.””

“That's not an answer.””

Her voice rose.

“You think I wanted to steal? We were drowning! Robert had no idea how much trouble we were in. I thought the sale would clear the debts, return the money, and leave us with enough to start over.””

“And when that failed?””

She looked away.

“Victor said he would make sure Robert lost everything.””

I sat down slowly.

For the first time, I saw the shape of the trap.

Holly had taken money, then signed an agreement she didn't fully understand. Robert had become involved because he wanted to save his home. Victor had used their desperation to gain access to the property.

But there was still one question.

“Daniel,” I said, “why is Victor interested in the company if the land is worth millions? Why risk all this trouble?””

“Because the land is only part of it.””

He paused.

“The trust owns shares in Carter Development Holdings. Those shares control several commercial properties, including the ones Denise told you about. If the trust is improperly dissolved, Victor can claim the company assets through a subsidiary he created years ago.””

“How much are the shares worth?””

“More than the land itself.””

Samuel leaned toward the phone.

“Daniel, this is Samuel Price. We have evidence of a forged authorization and an attempted transfer. Can you provide the original amendment?””

“Yes. But I need protection before I release it.””

Samuel nodded.

“We can arrange that.””

“Not through local authorities who have connections to Victor. I need an independent federal investigation.””

Samuel exchanged a glance with Michael.

“We can refer the evidence to the appropriate federal authorities, but we can't guarantee the outcome.””

“I understand.””

I looked at the phone.

“Daniel, I want to see you.””

He was quiet.

Then he said, “Tomorrow morning. I'll come to Dallas, and we'll meet somewhere safe.””

“Why not tonight?””

“Because I need to retrieve the original ledger.””

“The ledger is with you?””

“Yes.””

I glanced at the album.

“Daniel, we found a reference page inside the birthday album.””

His breathing changed.

“You opened it?””

“Only the photograph.””

“Did you remove the backing?””

“No.””

“Good. Don't. The paper behind it contains the access code to a digital archive. The ledger is the physical record, but the archive contains copies of the financial transactions.””

Samuel immediately began writing.

“Where is the archive stored?”” he asked.

“On a secure server. I'll provide the details tomorrow.””

I heard a faint sound on Daniel's end.

A door closing.

Then footsteps.

Daniel's voice became urgent.

“Ruth, I have to go.””

“Wait!””

“One more thing. Whatever happens tomorrow, don't let Robert meet Victor alone.””

“Why?””

“Because Victor knows Robert is the only person who can activate the trust, and he'll do whatever it takes to make him sign.””

The line crackled.

“Daniel?””

“Ruth, tell Robert something for me.””

“What?””

“Tell him his father never stopped loving him.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Holly covered her face.

Samuel immediately contacted his investigator and began arranging security for the following morning.

But I couldn't stop thinking about Robert.

My son had spent two weeks communicating with a father he believed had abandoned him. He had signed a preliminary agreement, allowed Holly to take money from the trust, and concealed the truth from me.

Yet he had also been threatened.

And somewhere beneath his pride and desperation, he was still the little boy who had once promised to buy me a house so I would never have to work again.

I picked up my phone and sent him a message.

Robert, I know about Victor. I know about the money. You need to stop communicating with him and get an independent lawyer.

His reply came a minute later.

Too late, Mom.

A second message appeared.

Victor has Ethan.

I stood so abruptly that my chair fell backward.

“What does that mean?”” I whispered.

Holly looked up.

“What?””

I showed her the screen.

She made a strangled sound.

“No. No, he wouldn't.””

Samuel was already dialing emergency services.

My phone rang.

Robert.

I answered immediately.

“Robert, where is Ethan?””

My son's voice was barely recognizable.

“Mom, I don't know.””

“What do you mean you don't know?””

“Holly went to pick him up from school, but he wasn't there. The school says someone signed him out.””

“Who?””

“They won't tell me. They're reviewing the security footage.””

I heard him begin to cry.

“Mom, I think Victor took my son.””

And for the first time since the birthday party, I no longer cared about the property, the money, or the inheritance.

May you like

All I cared about was finding my grandson.

Because if Victor Hale had taken Ethan to force Robert's cooperation, then the war that had begun twenty-nine years ago had finally reached the one person in our family who deserved none of it.
