Chapter 2: The Woman Who Started Crying Too Soon

Daniel didn't take the tablet immediately.

He stood beside the dining table, his breathing heavy, his fists still clenched. Vanessa remained pressed against him, one hand wrapped around his forearm.

“Dad, I'm not watching some video you've edited,” Daniel said.

I stared at him.

“Edited? You watched me stand here with my hands at my sides. You didn't ask a single question before hitting me. Now you're inventing reasons not to see the evidence?””

His jaw tightened.

“Vanessa was crying on the floor.””

“And I was standing three feet away from her.””

“She said you attacked her!””

“I know what she said.””

Vanessa began crying again.

“Daniel, please. I don't want to relive it.””

I almost laughed, but the pain in my cheek stopped me.

“Relive what, Vanessa? The part where you tore your own blouse?””

She recoiled.

“How dare you!””

Daniel stepped between us.

“Don't talk to her like that!””

“Then watch the recording.””

I placed the tablet on the dining table.

The room felt colder than it had a few minutes earlier. Pieces of broken glass glittered near my shoes. One of Margaret's old photographs had fallen sideways on the shelf, its frame tilted against the wall.

I wanted to pick it up.

Instead, I watched my son struggle with the choice in front of him.

He could believe his wife without question, or he could spend sixty seconds looking at something that might prove his father had been telling the truth.

Vanessa knew which choice she needed him to make.

“Daniel,” she whispered, touching his cheek, “you saw me on the floor. You heard me screaming. What more do you need?””

He looked at her.

“I just want to understand what happened.””

Her mouth opened slightly.

For a moment, she seemed unable to believe he had said it.

Then she lowered her voice.

“You're seriously going to make me prove that I was attacked?””

“I'm asking to see what happened before I came inside.””

She shook her head.

“You're choosing him over me.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“I'm trying to find out the truth.””

I watched his face.

It was the first sensible thing he had said since entering the house.

Vanessa released his arm and took a step backward.

“Fine. Watch it.””

Her voice trembled, but the expression in her eyes was different.

“Watch whatever sick little game he's prepared. And when he starts twisting things, don't expect me to stand here and be humiliated.””

I opened the recording for the dining-room camera.

The timestamp showed 2:17 p.m.

The video began with Vanessa standing beside the coffee table while I sat at the dining table. The audio was clear enough to hear the ice shifting inside my glass.

Daniel leaned over the screen.

“Turn it up.””

I increased the volume.

On the recording, Vanessa's voice filled the room.

Richard, we need to settle this today.

Then came the argument about the house.

Daniel watched without speaking.

When the recording reached the moment Vanessa told me I wouldn't live forever, his shoulders tightened.

He glanced at her.

She looked away.

On the screen, I stood and walked toward the kitchen. Vanessa followed me, continuing to argue.

Then the image showed something that made Daniel lean closer.

Vanessa stopped talking.

She looked toward the front door.

She glanced at the camera mounted near the ceiling.

Then she turned back toward me.

The recording had captured every movement.

“Why is she looking at the camera?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa answered too quickly.

“I was upset. I probably noticed it because I was looking around.””

“Keep watching,” I said.

The recording continued.

Vanessa moved closer to me, then stepped backward.

She looked toward the front door again.

And then she smiled.

Daniel's face drained of color.

On the screen, Vanessa raised both hands to her head and pulled at her hair. She tore the buttons from her blouse, dropped to her knees, and screamed for help.

The sound blasted through the tablet's speakers.

“DANIEL! HELP ME! YOUR FATHER IS ATTACKING ME!””

In the dining room, the real Vanessa made a strangled noise.

“Turn it off!””

Daniel didn't move.

The recording showed me standing beside the table with my hands open.

No grabbing.

No striking.

No physical contact.

Vanessa screamed again, then looked toward the front entrance.

Daniel's footsteps appeared on the second camera's audio.

He rushed inside.

On-screen, he saw Vanessa on the floor and immediately charged toward me.

The punch landed.

Daniel watched himself hit his father.

His hand slowly fell from the table.

“Oh, God,” he whispered.

The recording continued for another few seconds.

It showed him seizing my collar. It showed me stumbling against the wall. It showed Vanessa lifting her head over his shoulder.

Then came the smile.

The same smile I had seen in person.

A cold, satisfied expression that lasted less than a second.

But it was there.

Daniel stared at the screen as though he were watching a stranger commit a crime.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly.

She stepped toward him.

“Daniel, wait.””

He raised one hand.

“Don't.””

She stopped.

“You don't understand what you just watched,” she said.

“He provoked me. He has been tormenting me for months.””

The room fell silent.

I slowly turned toward her.

“Months?””

Her eyes darted toward me.

“I mean emotionally. He has been trying to turn you against me.””

Daniel looked back at the tablet.

“You said he attacked you.””

“He was going to!””

“He didn't touch you.””

“He could have!””

“But he didn't!””

Daniel's voice cracked on the last word.

Vanessa folded her arms across her torn blouse.

“You're making me sound like a criminal because I panicked.””

“Then why did you smile?””

“I didn't.””

“I saw you!””

“You saw a second of footage without context!””

Daniel shook his head.

For the first time, I saw something besides anger in his face.

Fear.

Not fear of me.

Fear that the woman he had defended without hesitation had deliberately used him.

He turned back to the tablet.

“Is there another camera?””

I nodded.

“The one in the living room covers the front entrance and most of the hallway. The dining-room camera doesn't show everything that happened when you came inside.””

Vanessa's head snapped toward me.

“Richard, enough.””

“No,” I said.

“You wanted everyone to believe your version of events. Now we're going to see all of them.””

Daniel took the tablet from the table.

His fingers shook as he opened the second recording.

The video showed Vanessa entering the living room at 2:03 p.m. It showed her setting her purse down and glancing at her phone. It showed me bringing the cake into the room.

Then Daniel's call came.

He walked outside.

Vanessa waited until the door closed.

She stood still for several seconds.

Then she opened her purse, took out her phone, and typed a message.

Daniel paused the recording.

“What's she doing?””

“I don't know,” I said.

Vanessa lunged toward the tablet.

“Give me that!””

Daniel jerked backward.

“Don't touch it!””

She stopped, breathing hard.

“You're my husband!””

“And he's my father!””

The words echoed through the room.

Daniel looked down at the screen again.

The recording continued.

Vanessa slipped her phone into her purse, walked toward the dining room, and stopped just outside the camera's clearest view.

She appeared to be listening.

Then she moved into the room.

The argument followed.

Daniel watched her movements, replaying the section where she looked toward the entrance.

“She knew I was coming back,” he whispered.

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“No. I didn't know when you'd come back.””

“Then why did you keep looking at the door?””

“Because I was upset!””

“Why did you look directly at the camera?””

“I already told you!””

Daniel's eyes remained fixed on the screen.

Then the recording reached the moment after she dropped to her knees.

She had screamed once.

She had looked toward the front door.

And before she screamed a second time, she had glanced at her phone on the coffee table.

Daniel rewound the video.

He watched it again.

Then a third time.

“What is that?”” he asked.

I leaned closer.

The camera's angle showed a small notification lighting up the phone screen.

The text was too small to read in the current view, but its appearance made Vanessa freeze.

Daniel noticed.

“What message did you get?””

“Nothing.””

“Your phone lit up.””

“It was probably an advertisement.””

He turned toward her.

“Then unlock it.””

She pressed a hand to her chest.

“You cannot be serious.””

“Unlock your phone, Vanessa.””

“I'm not giving you my phone because your father has spent years trying to destroy our marriage!””

I stepped away from the table.

“This has nothing to do with me anymore. You can explain the recording to your husband.””

Daniel held out his hand.

“Vanessa. Your phone.””

She stared at him.

For a moment, I thought she might throw it at the wall.

Instead, she snatched her purse from the table and backed toward the hallway.

“I'm leaving.””

Daniel followed her.

“Not until you explain why you lied.””

“I don't owe you an explanation for being afraid!””

“You weren't afraid. You were smiling!””

She turned on him.

“You hit your father because you believed me! That's what a husband does when his wife needs him!””

Daniel flinched as if she had struck him.

She had finally said the one thing she should never have said.

Not because it was entirely false, but because it revealed exactly how she understood his love.

To Vanessa, his loyalty wasn't something to cherish.

It was something to control.

Daniel looked down at his bruised knuckles.

Then he looked at me.

I saw the shame in his eyes.

“Dad,” he whispered, “I don't know what to say.””

I touched my swollen cheek.

“Start by telling me why you didn't ask me what happened.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa seized the silence.

“Because he knows what he did!””

Daniel turned toward her so quickly she stepped backward.

“Stop lying!””

She stared at him, her face twisting.

Then her phone vibrated inside her purse.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Daniel heard it.

So did I.

Vanessa clutched the purse against her body.

Daniel pointed toward it.

“Who keeps messaging you?””

“Nobody.””

“Show me.””

“No!””

He reached for the purse, but she pulled it away.

“You don't get to treat me like this!””

“Then stop acting like you have something to hide!””

She backed toward the front door.

Her eyes moved between Daniel and me, searching for a way out.

Then she made a mistake.

A small one.

But it changed everything.

She looked directly at me and said, “You were never supposed to have that footage.””

Daniel went completely still.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Because Vanessa hadn't merely known there might be cameras.

She had been planning around them.

And suddenly, I understood that the attack itself might have been only one part of something much larger.

Daniel slowly turned toward his wife.

“What do you mean, you weren't supposed to have the footage?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

No answer came.

Then Daniel's eyes dropped to the purse she was clutching.

May you like

“Open it,” he said.

And this time, his voice wasn't asking.
