Chapter 1

The day my perfect life began to collapse, I came home expecting to hear my sons laughing.
Instead, I heard them screaming.
Not the loud, playful shouting that usually echoed through our estate.
This was different.
This was fear.
The sound stopped me before I had even taken off my coat.
"Ethan?"
No answer.
Then Caleb screamed again.
"Don't take her!"
I ran toward the living room.
What I saw there made my stomach twist.
My six-year-old twins stood in the middle of the room, both of them crying so hard they could barely breathe.
Between them was Maya Thompson, their nanny.
Her wrists were cuffed behind her back.
Two police officers stood beside her.
And across the room, my wife Vivian looked almost perfectly calm.
Too calm.
Her blond-streaked hair was flawless.
Her cream dress didn't have a wrinkle.
Her expression carried none of the panic filling the room.
If anything, there was satisfaction in her eyes.
"What happened?"
Vivian turned toward me.
"Thank God you're home."
She walked over and touched my arm.
"Maya stole from us."
I stared at her.
"What?"
"My grandmother's jewelry."
Vivian pointed toward an open backpack on the coffee table.
Several antique pieces lay beside it.
A diamond brooch.
Two bracelets.
A gold necklace I knew had belonged to Vivian's grandmother.
"I found them hidden in her bag."
Maya shook her head immediately.
"Mr. Hale, please."
Her voice was broken from crying.
"I didn't put those there."
Caleb clung to her apron.
"She didn't steal!"
One officer gently tried pulling him away.
Caleb screamed louder.
"No!"
I crouched beside him.
"Caleb."
He threw himself against me.
"Daddy, make them stop!"
I held him tightly.
Behind him, Ethan hadn't moved.
That frightened me more.
Caleb had always been emotional.
When he was happy, the whole house knew.
When he was angry, everyone knew that too.
Ethan was quieter.
He watched.
He remembered.
And right then, he stood near the fireplace with his arms pressed against his sides.
His face was pale.
His eyes were fixed on Vivian.
Not Maya.
Not the police.
His mother.
Maya looked at me again.
"I was outside with the boys."
Vivian sighed.
"Maya."
"I was."
"Stop lying."
"I'm not lying."
Vivian's voice remained soft.
Almost kind.
That made it worse.
"I trusted you with my children."
Maya's face crumpled.
"I love those boys."
"Then you shouldn't have stolen from their family."
Caleb shouted.
"Mommy's lying!"
Everything stopped.
Vivian's expression changed for half a second.
Then the smile returned.
"Caleb is upset."
The officer beside Maya looked at me.
"Mr. Hale, we're taking Ms. Thompson for questioning. The property was discovered inside her personal bag."
"Was anyone else near the bag?"
Vivian answered immediately.
"No."
Maya stared at her.
"That's not true."
Vivian's jaw tightened.
"You left it in the mudroom."
Maya nodded.
"Exactly."
"Where anyone could access it?" I asked.
Vivian looked at me sharply.
"Are you seriously defending her?"
"I'm asking a question."
"We found stolen jewelry."
"That doesn't answer my question."
Maya whispered.
"Mr. Hale, please check the cameras."
Vivian's eyes flickered.
Only once.
But I saw it.
Before I could respond, one officer said the security footage could be reviewed during the investigation.
Vivian squeezed my arm.
"Please don't make this uglier than it already is."
I looked at her.
She lowered her voice.
"Not in front of the boys."
Then she looked toward Maya.
"Actions have consequences."
Something about the way she said it made Ethan flinch.
Not Caleb.
Ethan.
I turned toward him.
"Buddy?"
He immediately looked down.
The officers began walking Maya toward the entrance.
Caleb fought to follow her.
"Maya!"
She turned.
Tears streamed down her face.
"It's okay, sweetheart."
"No!"
"Listen to your dad."
Caleb sobbed.
"I want you!"
Maya looked at me one last time.
"I didn't do this."
Then she was gone.
The front door closed.
And suddenly the house became horribly quiet.
Caleb collapsed against me.
Vivian stood behind us.
"That was traumatic."
I almost turned around and asked her why she didn't look traumatized.
I didn't.
Not yet.
Then I noticed Ethan.
He was still staring at his mother.
Vivian noticed too.
"What?"
Ethan said nothing.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
His lips trembled.
I stood.
"Vivian."
"What?"
"He's six."
"I know how old my son is."
She smiled at Ethan.
"Sweetheart, Maya made a bad choice."
Ethan whispered.
"No."
Vivian's smile disappeared.
"What did you say?"
He looked at the floor.
"Nothing."
I felt something cold crawl along my spine.
That evening, Vivian spent nearly an hour on the terrace speaking with one of her club friends.
I heard pieces of the conversation.
"Ungrateful."
"After everything we gave her."
"You can't trust people."
I stayed in the kitchen with the boys.
I made hot chocolate.
Two mugs.
Extra marshmallows.
Caleb drank his quickly.
Ethan barely touched his.
"Want more?"
He shook his head.
"Do you want to talk?"
Another shake.
Caleb leaned against me.
"Maya's coming back, right?"
I forced myself not to lie.
"I don't know yet."
"She didn't steal."
"I heard you."
"You believe me?"
I looked at him.
"I believe there's more to understand."
Ethan's fingers tightened around his mug.
I noticed.
"What is it?"
He shook his head.
"Nothing."
Hours later, I put them to bed.
Caleb fell asleep quickly from exhaustion.
Ethan didn't.
Around midnight, I woke to someone pulling lightly on my sleeve.
I opened my eyes.
Ethan stood beside my bed.
His face was white.
"Buddy?"
He glanced toward the bedroom door.
Vivian was still downstairs.
"Come here."
He climbed onto the bed.
His hands were shaking.
"What happened?"
He whispered.
"Daddy, you can't tell Mommy I told you."
Every instinct inside me sharpened.
"Why?"
"Promise."
My chest tightened.
"Ethan, if something dangerous is happening, I may need to help."
Tears filled his eyes.
"She'll hurt Caleb."
I stopped breathing.
"Who?"
His mouth trembled.
Then my six-year-old son whispered the words that destroyed everything I thought I knew about my wife.
"Mommy put Grandma's jewelry in Maya's bag."
My entire body went cold.
Ethan grabbed my sleeve harder.
"I saw her."
I stared at him.
He began crying silently.
"And Daddy..."
"What?"
"She told me if I ever told you what she does when you're gone..."
May you like
His voice broke.
"She said next time she wouldn't just make Maya disappear."
