Chapter 4: The Truth Behind the Envelope
“Daddy, will Mommy and I still have a home?””
Ava's question hung in the living room.
Daniel stared at his daughter, his lips parted, but no words came out. Behind him, the security camera blinked its tiny red light, recording the silence of a man who had run out of excuses.
Naomi held her phone in one hand and the unfamiliar lipstick in the other.
She had stopped crying.
Somewhere between seeing Brooke in her living room and discovering the attempted transfer of their savings, something inside her had gone frighteningly still.
“Answer her,” Naomi said.
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“Ava, sweetheart, of course you'll have a home.””
“Then why did you take the money?””
“I didn't take anything.””
Naomi raised her phone.
“The bank says our account access has been modified. Your name is on the authorization document. I just watched you discuss moving the money before it was too late for me to notice.””
Daniel stepped toward her.
“It's a business arrangement. I was going to explain everything.””
“When? After the account was empty?””
“No.””
“After you left us?””
“Naomi, please.””
She pointed toward the sofa.
“Sit down.””
He blinked.
“What?””
“You heard me. Sit down, and don't come near me.””
For a moment, Daniel looked as though he might argue. He had spent years speaking with the confidence of a man who expected everyone around him to accommodate his decisions.
But then he glanced at Ava.
His daughter was watching him as though she no longer recognized him.
He sat.
Brooke remained beside the front door, her handbag clutched against her stomach.
Naomi turned to her.
“You said three months. Were you aware he was planning to transfer our savings?””
Brooke shook her head quickly.
“He told me he was protecting his share of the money.””
“His share?””
“He said the house was practically his. He said you two had been living separate lives for a long time.””
Naomi stared at Daniel.
“Is that what you've been telling her?””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Brooke's voice grew defensive.
“He said your marriage was over. He said you were staying together for Ava.””
Naomi almost laughed.
They had celebrated their anniversary six weeks earlier. Daniel had taken her to the restaurant where he proposed, held her hand across the table, and promised that their best years were still ahead.
He had given her a necklace afterward.
The same necklace she had worn every day since.
“Did he tell you about our anniversary?”” Naomi asked.
Brooke looked away.
“Did he tell you that he promised to take our daughter to the zoo last Sunday, then canceled because he said he was exhausted?””
“I don't know anything about that.””
“Of course you don't.””
Naomi turned back to her husband.
“You built two different lives and expected both women to believe you.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“I know how this looks.””
“No, you don't.”” Her voice sharpened.
“Because if you did, you wouldn't be sitting there worrying about how it looks. You'd be worried about what you've done.””
He swallowed.
“I was unhappy.””
The words struck her harder than the confession of the affair.
Naomi stared at him for several seconds.
“Then you should have told me.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Things haven't been right between us.””
“Then you should have told me!””
Her voice cracked.
Ava flinched at the sound.
Naomi immediately looked toward the staircase.
“I'm sorry, baby. Mommy isn't angry with you.””
Ava shook her head.
“I'm not scared of you, Mommy.””
Naomi's eyes filled.
“Come here, sweetheart.””
Ava hurried down the stairs and ran into her mother's arms. Naomi knelt, wrapped both arms around her daughter, and pressed her cheek against Ava's hair.
“You didn't do anything wrong,” Naomi whispered.
Ava began to cry.
“I saw Daddy kissing Brooke. I didn't know if I should tell you.””
Naomi held her tighter.
“Oh, honey.””
“I thought you'd be sad.””
“I am sad, baby. But not because of you. Never because of you.””
Ava buried her face in Naomi's shoulder.
“I turned the camera back on.””
Naomi pulled away just enough to look at her.
“You did?””
Ava nodded.
“I remembered the numbers. I thought maybe if the camera was on, you could see what happened.””
Naomi glanced toward the ceiling.
The small camera that Daniel had disabled to hide his affair had become the reason she had discovered the truth.
She kissed Ava's forehead.
“You were very brave. But you don't have to protect Mommy from grown-up problems. That's my job.””
“Are you going to leave Daddy?””
The question came so softly that Naomi almost didn't hear it.
She looked at Daniel.
He was watching them, his eyes wet, his hands clasped tightly between his knees.
“I don't know yet,” she admitted.
“But I promise you something. You and I will be safe, and you will never have to earn anybody's love by keeping secrets.””
Ava nodded against her shoulder.
Behind them, Brooke shifted toward the door.
“I should go.””
Naomi stood slowly.
“Yes. You should.””
Brooke reached for the handle, but Daniel suddenly rose.
“Wait.””
She turned.
“What now?””
“I need to talk to you.””
Brooke gave a disbelieving laugh.
“Are you serious?””
“Just give me a minute.””
“You've spent three months telling me your wife was the problem. Now I'm standing in front of her, and suddenly you want me to stay?””
Daniel's face tightened.
“Brooke, don't make this worse.””
She stared at him.
“You made it worse when you lied to both of us.””
Naomi watched the exchange without speaking.
For the first time, Brooke looked less like a rival and more like another person who had believed a carefully constructed lie. That didn't erase her choices, and it didn't make Naomi forgive her. But it did explain why Brooke had looked so shocked when the conversation turned to money.
Brooke opened the door.
Then she paused.
“Naomi?””
Naomi looked at her.
“I didn't know he was going to take your savings.””
“But you knew he was married.””
Brooke's face fell.
“Yes.””
“And you came here anyway.””
Brooke lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
“Then don't ask me to feel sorry for you.””
Brooke nodded once and left.
The door closed behind her.
Daniel took a step toward Naomi.
“Now that she's gone, can we talk?””
Naomi looked at him with disbelief.
“Did you really think the problem was Brooke?””
“No.””
“Because I can assure you, Daniel, she isn't the person who stood in my kitchen this morning and kissed me goodbye.””
He lowered his head.
“I know.””
“She's not the person who promised our daughter that we'd all celebrate her birthday together.””
“I know.””
“And she's not the person who took our savings and tried to move them into an account I can't access.””
Daniel's face went pale.
“I wasn't going to leave you with nothing.””
Naomi lifted her phone.
“Then explain this.””
She handed him the screen showing the bank notification.
Daniel glanced at it and immediately looked away.
“The transfer hasn't completed.””
“That isn't an explanation.””
He sat back down.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was Ava's quiet sniffing.
Then Daniel finally spoke.
“I wanted to move the money into a separate account before I filed for divorce.””
Naomi stared at him.
“You've already decided to divorce me?””
“I thought it would be easier if I had everything organized.””
“For whom?””
He didn't answer.
“For you,” she said.
“You organized it for yourself.””
“Naomi, I was afraid.””
“Of what? Losing money? Losing your comfortable life? Having to explain to your daughter why her father broke his promises?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“I didn't plan for any of this to happen.””
“You planned every part of it. You planned when to turn off the cameras. You planned when to bring Brooke here.
You planned the transfer. You planned to tell me nothing until you had already protected yourself.””
She took a breath.
“Don't insult me by calling that an accident.””
Daniel looked at the envelope on the coffee table.
Naomi followed his gaze.
“Give it to me.””
He hesitated.
“Daniel.””
He picked up the envelope and handed it over.
Naomi removed the documents.
The first page contained account information. The second listed assets connected to Daniel's property development company. The third included a form authorizing the transfer of funds between accounts.
At the bottom was a signature.
Her signature.
Naomi stopped moving.
The room seemed to tilt.
She had never signed that document.
She looked at the handwriting. The capital N was slightly too narrow, and the final stroke of her surname was too long.
It was an imitation.
A good one.
But an imitation.
“Did you forge my signature?””
Daniel said nothing.
She held the paper up.
“Did you?””
“I was going to tell you.””
“That's not an answer!””
“Yes,” he whispered.
“I signed it.””
Naomi stared at him.
The affair had been a betrayal of her heart.
The money had been a betrayal of their family.
But the forged signature was something else entirely.
He had taken the trust she had given him over eight years and used it to make her an unwilling participant in his plan.
“You were going to make it look like I agreed to this.””
“I didn't think it would come to that.””
“You put my name on a legal document without my permission.””
“I was going to reverse it.””
“When?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Before the transfer completed.””
Naomi's fingers tightened around the pages.
She had once believed that knowing a person for years meant understanding what they were capable of.
Now she realized she had mistaken familiarity for certainty.
“Get out of my house,” she said.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?””
“Take your keys. Take whatever clothes you need for tonight. But you are not sleeping in this house.””
“Naomi, please. We need to discuss this.””
“We will discuss it through lawyers.””
His face changed.
“You're calling a lawyer?””
She looked at him coldly.
“You forged my signature. You tried to move our savings. And you brought your mistress into our home while our daughter was here. What exactly did you expect me to do?””
He stood, his voice rising.
“You can't just throw me out of my own house!””
Ava whimpered.
Naomi immediately stepped in front of her.
“Lower your voice.””
Daniel looked at his daughter, then back at Naomi.
“This is still my home.””
“Then you should have treated the people living in it like your family.””
For a long moment, neither moved.
Then Naomi placed the documents inside her handbag.
“I'm calling the bank. You are not touching another account until I know exactly what you've done.””
Daniel reached for his phone.
“Let me call them. I can explain.””
“No.””
“Naomi—”
“No more secret phone calls. No more hidden paperwork. No more deciding what I can and cannot know.””
She picked up her phone and dialed the bank's number.
As she waited for someone to answer, Daniel stood near the sofa, staring at the camera.
The little red light blinked again.
He had switched it off to hide a kiss.
He had never imagined it would expose everything else.
Naomi spoke to the bank representative for nearly twenty minutes. She verified her identity, reported the unauthorized authorization, and asked for the transfer to be stopped. The representative confirmed that the transaction was still pending and placed a restriction on the account while the bank investigated.
When she ended the call, her hands were shaking.
“It's stopped,” she said.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Thank God.””
Naomi looked at him.
“Don't thank God. Thank the fact that you didn't finish stealing from your own family.””
He flinched.
She opened the front door.
“Go.””
Daniel picked up his keys, then paused beside Ava.
“Sweetheart, Daddy loves you.””
Ava hid behind her mother's leg.
“Then why did you make Mommy cry?””
Daniel's face crumpled.
He crouched, but Ava stepped backward.
He slowly stood again.
Naomi watched him leave.
When the door shut, the house fell silent.
Ava tugged at her mother's sleeve.
“Mommy?””
“Yes, baby?””
“Can we still have my birthday party?””
Naomi knelt and held her daughter's hands.
“Of course we can.””
“Even if Daddy doesn't come?””
Naomi swallowed the ache in her throat.
“We'll figure that out together.””
Ava leaned forward and hugged her.
Naomi held her until the little girl's breathing settled.
Then she carried her upstairs, tucked her into bed, and sat beside her while she fell asleep.
Only after Ava's eyes finally closed did Naomi return to the living room.
The envelope was still on the coffee table.
She opened it again, looking carefully at every page.
At the bottom of the final document, beneath the forged signature, she noticed a reference number and a company name she had never seen before.
It wasn't Daniel's development company.
It was a separate business registered in another state.
And beside the business name was the name of a second authorized signatory.
Naomi took a photograph of the page.
Then she searched the name on her phone.
Her breath caught.
The business wasn't owned by Brooke.
It wasn't owned by Daniel alone, either.
The public registration listed a third person as the majority owner.
Someone Naomi knew.
Someone who had attended her wedding.
Someone who had held Ava as a newborn and promised to protect their family.
May you like
Her phone slipped slightly in her hand.
Because the name on the screen belonged to her own sister.
