Chapter 8: The Person I Trusted Most

For a few seconds, I thought I had heard him wrong.

Rachel.

My sister.

The person who sat beside me when I cried.

The person who brought groceries when Julian left.

The person who told me I needed to stop protecting him.

The person who held my hand and told me I deserved better.

“No.””

The word came out before I even realized I had spoken.

Julian looked at me.

“Emily—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Not Rachel.””

His expression was painful.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

I stared at him.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“You’re trying to shift the blame.””

His face tightened.

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like you’re looking for someone else to be responsible.””

He nodded slowly.

“Maybe that’s what I would have done before.””

That sentence stopped me.

Because he wasn’t fighting.

He wasn’t defending himself.

He looked tired.

Like he was finally done hiding.

“But I’m telling you because you deserve the truth.””

I crossed my arms.

“Then prove it.””

Julian reached for his phone.

“I have messages.””

I didn’t move.

“What messages?””

“Between Rachel and Olivia.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Why would you have those?””

“Olivia sent them to me.””

“Why?””

He looked down.

“Because she said she was tired of being part of a lie.””

I stared at him.

Another person claiming guilt.

Another person saying they wanted honesty after helping create the damage.

“Show me.””

Julian unlocked his phone.

He opened a conversation.

I didn’t want to look.

A part of me wanted to walk away.

Because as much as I hated what Julian had done, I wasn’t ready for another betrayal.

Not from Rachel.

Not from someone who had protected me my entire life.

But I looked.

The first message was from Rachel.

*Rachel: She’s exhausted. She’s not paying attention to anything except the babies.*

My stomach twisted.

The next one was Olivia.

*Olivia: So he’s still unhappy?*

Rachel replied:

*Rachel: He doesn’t know how to say it. He feels invisible.*

I stepped back.

Invisible.

The same word Julian had used.

The same story.

The same version of events where he was the victim.

I kept reading.

*Olivia: Does she know how serious it is?*

Rachel:

*Rachel: No. She thinks he’s just stressed.*

My hands started shaking.

I looked up.

“Why?””

Julian didn’t answer.

“Why would she do this?””

He looked miserable.

“I don’t know.””

“Yes, you do.””

He shook his head.

“I really don’t.””

I walked away from him.

I needed space.

I needed air.

Because my mind was filled with memories.

Rachel sitting on my couch.

Rachel telling me Julian was wrong.

Rachel asking me questions about my marriage.

Rachel knowing things she shouldn’t have known.

Then suddenly, small details started changing.

The time Rachel came over and said Julian seemed unhappy.

The time she told me I should give him more space.

The time she said, “Men don’t always know how to ask for help.””

I had thought she was defending him.

Now I wondered if she had been preparing me.

“Did she know about Claire?””

Julian was quiet.

“Yes.””

My eyes closed.

Of course.

“Before me?””

He nodded.

“She knew before you.””

A bitter laugh escaped my mouth.

“Everyone knew before me.””

Julian looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

I turned around.

“Stop saying that.””

He froze.

“I know you’re sorry.””

My voice cracked.

“But do you understand what it feels like?””

He didn’t answer.

“I trusted you.””

Then I pointed toward my phone.

“I trusted her.””

I swallowed.

“I was sitting with Rachel telling her how lonely I felt.””

My eyes burned.

“And she already knew why.””

Julian looked away.

That was the moment something changed.

Because for the first time, I wasn’t just angry at him.

I was grieving.

Grieving the people I thought I knew.

The next morning, I called Rachel.

She answered immediately.

“Hey, are you okay?””

That question almost broke me.

Because she sounded exactly the same.

Like nothing had happened.

“Rachel.””

A pause.

“What’s wrong?””

I took a breath.

“Did you talk to Olivia?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

“Emily…”

That was all I needed.

“You did.””

She exhaled.

“Please let me explain.””

I laughed softly.

“Everyone wants to explain.””

“Emily, it wasn’t what you think.””

I closed my eyes.

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

“Please.””

I sat down.

“Why?””

There was silence.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Because I saw you disappearing.””

My anger paused.

“What?””

“I saw what motherhood was doing to you.””

I gripped the phone.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“I thought you were losing yourself.””

“So you helped my husband find someone else?””

“No!””

Her voice cracked.

“I never wanted that.””

“Then what did you want?””

She was quiet.

Finally, she said:

“I wanted him to understand that he wasn’t alone.””

I felt sick.

“Rachel.””

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like you chose him.””

“No.””

“Then why did you talk about me?””

“Because I was worried.””

I stood up.

“About me?””

“Yes.””

“Then you should have talked to me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

She hadn’t.

“You talked about me behind my back.””

“I made a mistake.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became quieter.

“You made choices.””

She started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I almost hated hearing that.

Because suddenly everyone was sorry.

After the damage.

After the secrets.

After I found out.

“I need space from you too.””

“Emily, please.””

“I can’t talk to you right now.””

Then I ended the call.

For the first time in my life, I hung up on my sister.

And it hurt more than I expected.

That afternoon, Julian found me sitting in the nursery.

“What happened?””

I looked at him.

“I talked to Rachel.””

He sat down carefully.

“Are you okay?””

I almost smiled.

It was strange.

After everything.

He was finally asking.

“No.””

He nodded.

“I understand.””

I looked at him.

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

“You lost my trust.””

He nodded.

“She lost my trust too.””

That surprised me.

Because despite everything, he wasn’t defending her.

“I don’t know what happens now.””

Julian looked at our daughters sleeping.

“Neither do I.””

For a while, we sat there quietly.

Then he said something unexpected.

“I think I need to leave for a while.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Not because I’m running away.””

The words mattered.

Because that was exactly what he had done before.

“I need to understand who I am without making everyone else responsible for my feelings.””

I didn’t answer.

“I’m going to stay with my brother.””

“How long?””

“I don’t know.””

That scared me.

Even after everything.

Because some part of me still wanted him to choose us.

But this time, he wasn’t leaving because he wanted freedom.

He was leaving because he finally understood the damage.

Before he packed his things, he stopped at the door.

“I love you.””

I looked at him.

“I know.””

“And I know that doesn’t fix anything.””

“No.””

He nodded.

“I’ll prove it if you let me.””

Then he walked out.

The house became quiet again.

But this time, I wasn’t abandoned.

I was choosing myself.

Three days later, I received a letter.

No name.

No return address.

Just my name written on the front.

Inside was a handwritten note.

The handwriting looked familiar.

Too familiar.

I read the first line.

And my entire body froze.

*Emily, I know you think you know what happened between Julian and me. But there is one thing he still doesn’t know.*

I kept reading.

May you like

The next sentence made my hands go numb.

*The night he left for the fishing trip, he wasn’t planning to come back alone.*
