Chapter 9: The Child Who Was Never Supposed to Exist
I stared at the adoption certificate until the words blurred.
Michael Bennett.
Sarah Whitmore.
The names appeared beneath the heading Biological Parents.
My father and the woman standing in front of me.
For sixteen years, I had believed Michael had chosen to raise me because he loved me despite not being my biological father.
Now I was learning that he might have been my biological father all along.
I looked at Sarah.
"You're saying Dad was my father?""
She nodded through her tears.
"Yes.""
"And you were my mother?""
"Yes.""
I gripped the edge of the dresser.
"Then why did everyone tell me Darla was my mother?""
Sarah looked toward Daniel.
"Because Eleanor wanted the records changed. She wanted the children separated, and she wanted each family to believe the arrangement was permanent.""
I shook my head.
"But why would my father agree to it?""
"He didn't," Sarah whispered.
"Not at first.""
I closed my eyes.
I could almost hear Michael telling me to be brave, the way he had when I was a little girl and afraid of the dark.
"Tell me everything.""
Sarah sat on the edge of the bed.
"When Michael and I met, we were young. We fell in love before either of us understood how dangerous Daniel's family could be. Eleanor believed our relationship would create problems for the Whitmore inheritance.""
Daniel looked away.
"My mother was obsessed with control," he said.
"She believed every person in the family existed to serve its future.""
Sarah nodded.
"When I became pregnant with you, Eleanor offered Michael money to leave me. He refused. Then she approached Darla, who was pregnant with another child.""
I stared at her.
"My mother?""
"Yes. Darla had been working for a family connected to Eleanor. She was struggling financially, and Eleanor promised to provide for her if she agreed to carry a baby for a couple who couldn't have children.""
I thought of the $50,000 my mother had accepted years later, then the $120,000 transfer.
Money had been part of every chapter of my life, even when I hadn't known it.
"Who was the couple?""
Sarah's eyes filled with tears.
"Daniel and his wife.""
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded slowly.
"My wife had suffered several miscarriages. Eleanor believed that if I had a son, the inheritance would remain secure.""
"So Darla was carrying your child?""
"That's what we believed.""
"And then what happened?""
Sarah took a shaky breath.
"Three babies were born at St. Catherine's. You, Nathan, and the child Darla carried.
Eleanor had arranged for the hospital to transfer the babies according to her plan. But something went wrong.""
"What?""
"Your father discovered that Eleanor intended to give Nathan to a family she could control and send you to Darla. He knew Darla wasn't your biological mother, and he knew she was being paid to keep quiet.""
I thought of the entries in the notebook.
The hospital insists there has been a mistake.
I know what I heard.
Michael had known.
He had tried to stop it.
Sarah continued.
"Michael took you home before the final paperwork was completed. He refused to hand you over to Eleanor's chosen guardians. He told her he would raise you himself, and he would expose everything if she tried to take you away.""
Daniel's expression darkened.
"My mother agreed to let him keep you because she believed she could control him through Darla.""
I looked at him.
"How?""
"She threatened to reveal Darla's involvement in the arrangement. She threatened to have her charged with fraud. Darla was frightened. She agreed to raise you as her own and never reveal the truth.""
I thought of my mother teaching me to tie my shoes.
Her hands guiding mine around the laces.
Her voice telling me that I could do anything if I worked hard enough.
Was any of it real?
Sarah seemed to read my thoughts.
"Emma, whatever mistakes Darla made, she raised you. She loved you in her own way.""
I swallowed.
"She kissed my husband.""
Sarah looked down.
"I know.""
"And she helped hide the truth about my father.""
"I know.""
"Then don't ask me to forgive her.""
"I'm not.""
Her answer surprised me.
She reached for my hand.
"I'm asking you not to let their choices decide what you believe about yourself.""
I looked at her.
For the first time, I saw something familiar in her expression.
The same slight crease between the eyebrows that appeared in my own face when I was concentrating.
The same way she held her fingers together when she was afraid.
I had spent my entire life searching for pieces of myself in the wrong places.
Now I was sitting beside a woman whose face might explain why I had never felt entirely like the family I grew up in.
But there was still one question.
"What happened to the third baby?""
Sarah closed her eyes.
"The baby Darla carried was supposed to be Daniel's son. But when the child was born, the hospital recorded him as stillborn.""
Daniel shook his head.
"No. My son died years later. Nathan was the child we were told had died after birth.""
Sarah turned toward him.
"That is what Eleanor wanted you to believe.""
Daniel went pale.
I looked between them.
"What does that mean?""
Sarah reached for the adoption certificate.
"The child Darla carried was never intended to be raised by her. Eleanor arranged for him to be placed with another family, but the transfer was never completed. Instead, the hospital director gave the child to a nurse who had recently lost her own baby.""
I stared at her.
"Who was the nurse?""
Sarah looked at me.
"Margaret Hale.""
The name struck me like a blow.
"Martin's mother?""
Sarah nodded.
"She raised the child as her own. She told everyone he was born prematurely, and she altered his birth certificate.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Sarah's voice broke.
"Emma, the child Darla carried was Martin Hale.""
I stared at her.
The lawyer.
The man who had hidden the hospital records.
The man who had threatened my mother.
The man who had apparently been involved in my father's death.
Martin had been the baby Eleanor wanted to control.
And he had grown up to become the person who controlled everyone else.
Daniel sank into a chair.
"My mother gave the child she wanted to control the power to control the entire family.""
Sarah nodded.
"Martin spent his life trying to prove that he belonged to the Whitmore family. He believed that if he could destroy the original records, he could keep the truth from coming out.""
I looked at the certificate again.
Three babies.
Three different lives.
Three families connected by a plan that had begun before any of us could speak.
"And Cole?"" I asked.
Sarah's face tightened.
"Cole was adopted by the family Eleanor selected for Nathan. She believed that if Nathan was raised away from Daniel, he would never inherit the family fortune.""
I stared at her.
"Then Cole really is Nathan?""
"Yes.""
I felt a strange mixture of relief and horror.
My husband wasn't my brother.
But he had still lied to me.
He had still accepted Daniel's money.
He had still betrayed me with my mother.
Nothing about the truth erased those things.
"Where is the original file now?"" I asked.
Sarah looked toward the door.
"Martin took it to his office. But he doesn't know I made a copy of the final page.""
She reached into her coat and removed a small sheet of paper.
It contained a handwritten list of payments.
The first payment was dated three days before my father's death.
The recipient was a private mechanic.
The amount was $15,000.
Beside it was a note.
Vehicle inspection. Brake line.
My breath stopped.
"Martin paid someone to damage Dad's car.""
Sarah nodded.
"He arranged the accident because Michael had discovered the original transfer records. He knew Michael would expose everything.""
Daniel rose.
"Then we go to the police.""
Sarah shook her head.
"Not yet.""
Daniel stared at her.
"What do you mean, not yet?""
"Martin has the original file, and he knows we're here. If he realizes we have the payment records, he'll destroy the evidence.""
I looked at the page.
"Then what do we do?""
Sarah turned toward me.
"We make him believe he still has control.""
I stared at her.
"You want me to help you set a trap?""
"I want you to help us finish what your father started.""
I looked at my stomach.
My daughter moved beneath my palm.
I had spent the entire day being told what I could know, what I should do, and which truths I was allowed to hear.
I was tired of being protected by lies.
"Tell me the plan.""
Sarah explained that Martin had scheduled a private meeting with Daniel for the following afternoon. He intended to offer a settlement in exchange for the destruction of the remaining documents.
"We'll tell him Daniel agrees," she said.
"We'll make him believe the original file is safe and that no one has seen the payment records.""
"And then?""
"We record the meeting. Daniel gets him to admit what he did.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Can you do that?""
He nodded.
"I can.""
I turned toward Sarah.
"And if he refuses?""
She held my gaze.
"Then we give everything to the police and let them investigate.""
I took a breath.
"Fine.""
Daniel reached for my shoulder, but I stepped away.
"Don't.""
He lowered his hand.
"I'm sorry.""
"I know.""
It was the first time I had said those words without feeling the need to comfort him.
I looked at the payment record again.
"There's one more thing I need to know.""
Sarah waited.
"Why did Cole marry me? If Daniel wanted information, why did he need a marriage?""
Daniel answered quietly.
"Because I believed the person responsible for changing the records was still watching your family. I thought a husband would have access to things an outsider couldn't see.""
I stared at him.
"You used my marriage as an investigation.""
"Yes.""
"And you knew Cole might be Nathan?""
"Yes.""
"Did you think we might be related?""
Daniel's face tightened.
"That was one of the possibilities I needed to rule out.""
I felt sick.
He had allowed me to marry a man who might have been my brother because he wanted answers.
I turned away.
"I never want to hear you say you were protecting me again.""
He bowed his head.
"I understand.""
My phone buzzed.
A message from Cole.
*I found something in the notebook. You need to see it before you meet Martin.*
A photograph followed.
It showed a page from my father's notebook, one I hadn't seen.
At the bottom, Michael had written:
Martin wasn't working alone. Someone in the family helped him.
Below it was a name.
*Darla Bennett.*
I stared at the screen.
My mother.
The woman who had raised me.
The woman who had kissed my husband.
The woman who had accepted money to hide my identity.
And now, according to my father's final notes, the woman who might have helped Martin destroy the truth.
I looked up at Sarah.
She saw my expression and reached for the phone.
When she read the name, she went completely still.
"No," she whispered.
I stared at her.
"Do you know something?""
Sarah looked at Daniel.
He had gone pale.
Then she turned back to me.
"Emma, there's something else about your birth that we haven't discussed.""
I felt my heart begin to race.
"What?""
She took a shaky breath.
"The baby Darla carried wasn't the only child she was paid to protect.""
I stared at her.
"Then who was the other child?""
Sarah looked toward the doorway.
And the answer came from behind us.
"I was.""
My mother stood in the hall.
Her face was wet with tears.
She looked at me, then at the notebook in my hand.
"I was the baby Eleanor paid to keep alive.""
The room went silent.
I stared at the woman who had raised me.
May you like
And for the first time, I understood that the truth might not be a story about who my parents were.
It might be a story about why my mother had spent her entire life terrified of the woman who arranged my birth.
