Chapter 8: The Name Hidden in the Files

The next morning, I woke up feeling like I had aged ten years.

The woman who had walked into the Whitmore house the night before was gone.

The woman who believed marriage meant trust.

The woman who thought love was enough.

She had disappeared somewhere between the fake documents and my father’s final recording.

I sat at the kitchen table with Rachel and Daniel.

The three of us looked like people who should never have been sitting together.

Rachel opened the laptop.

“The files from your father’s drive are incomplete.””

I frowned.

“Incomplete?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because someone deleted parts of them.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Can you recover them?””

Rachel nodded.

“Some.””

She opened another folder.

A list of names appeared.

Companies.

Accounts.

Transfers.

Then one name appeared repeatedly.

My eyes narrowed.

“Who is Victor Hale?””

Daniel immediately went quiet.

I noticed.

“Daniel.””

He looked up.

“I know that name.””

“From where?””

He hesitated.

“Business.””

Rachel looked at him sharply.

“Not just business.””

“What does that mean?””

She closed the laptop.

“Victor Hale was Eleanor’s biggest partner.””

I stared.

“And?””

“And he disappeared after your father died.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“Ask him.””

I turned.

Daniel rubbed his face.

“I don’t know everything.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course you don’t.””

“I met him once.””

“When?””

“Before we got married.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

Daniel looked away.

“At my mother’s house.””

The room went silent.

“You introduced him to me as a family friend,” I said.

Daniel nodded.

I stood up.

“You knew him before our wedding.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“I didn’t think it mattered.””

I stared at him.

“How many things didn’t matter, Daniel?””

He had no answer.

Later that afternoon, Rachel took us to an old storage facility outside the city.

She had found the location in Eleanor’s hidden records.

Inside was a locked container.

The manager handed Rachel a key.

“Your name is still on the contract,” he said.

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

“That’s because Eleanor never updated it.””

The container door opened.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds of files.

Photographs.

Old computers.

And a small black notebook.

Rachel picked it up.

“This is what we need.””

We opened it carefully.

The first pages contained dates.

Meetings.

Payments.

Names.

Then I saw something.

A familiar name.

Mine.

Next to it was a date.

The date of my first meeting with Daniel.

I felt sick.

“He was tracking me?””

Rachel looked at the notebook.

“No.””

She turned the page.

“Eleanor was.””

The notes described my job.

My habits.

My family.

My apartment.

My favorite places.

It wasn’t a love story.

It was surveillance.

“She researched me before I even knew Daniel,” I whispered.

Daniel looked devastated.

“I didn’t know.””

I turned toward him.

“That’s the problem.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“You keep saying you didn’t know.””

I shook my head.

“You built your whole life around not knowing.””

Before he could answer, Rachel found something.

A photograph.

She held it up.

My father.

Eleanor.

Victor Hale.

And Daniel.

All together.

My heart stopped.

The photo was taken twenty years ago.

Daniel looked young.

Barely an adult.

I stared at him.

“You said you met Victor once.””

Daniel went pale.

“I don’t remember this.””

“You’re in the picture.””

“I know.””

“Then remember.””

He sat down.

His hands shook.

“My mother told me I was there for a business dinner.””

Rachel looked at him.

“She was introducing you.””

“To who?””

Rachel pointed at Victor.

“Your future partner.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

“She wanted you involved in the family business.””

I stared at the photograph.

Then everything clicked.

Eleanor didn’t just want control over me.

She wanted control over Daniel too.

He wasn’t her accomplice.

He was her investment.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

This time from Victor Hale.

I knew because the name appeared on the screen.

*You are asking the wrong questions, Claire.*

A second message arrived.

*Your husband is not the only person Eleanor manipulated.*

Then another.

A photograph appeared.

It showed my father.

Alive.

Standing outside a courthouse.

With a woman beside him.

A woman I recognized.

My mother.

But my mother had died when I was young.

I stared at the picture.

My hands began shaking.

Daniel saw my face.

“What is it?””

I looked at him.

“My mother.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“What about her?””

I turned the phone around.

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Because suddenly, the story I had been told about my family…

was falling apart too.
