Chapter 5: The Room Behind the Locked Door
Commander Lewis moved first.
He hurried into the corridor, speaking into his radio as the hotel security team began checking the service exits.
Admiral Mercer remained beside me.
"Don't follow her," he said.
"I wasn't going to.""
I was lying.
Every instinct told me to chase Celeste down, grab her by the shoulders, and demand to know what she had done.
But I had learned the hard way that running toward danger without understanding it could cost someone their life.
Daniel had paid that price.
I wouldn't let anger make me careless again.
My father stood motionless in the conference room doorway.
"She panicked," he said.
I looked at him.
"Why?""
"Because you have spent the evening attacking this family.""
"I asked her the name of a company.""
"You asked her in front of an admiral and a military investigator.""
"She recognized it.""
Richard's expression tightened.
"She works in corporate development. She recognizes thousands of company names.""
"Then why did she run?""
He didn't answer.
Evan entered the room, carrying his phone.
"Celeste isn't answering.""
My mother sank into a chair.
"Richard, what is happening?""
He ignored her.
Instead, he pointed at me.
"This is your doing.""
I stared at him.
"My doing?""
"If you hadn't returned tonight, none of this would have happened.""
For a moment, I was too stunned to speak.
Then I noticed something strange.
My father wasn't asking whether Celeste was safe.
He wasn't asking what the investigation concerned.
He was angry that I had returned.
"How long have you known about Meridian Strategic Logistics?"" I asked.
His jaw tightened.
"I have no idea what you're talking about.""
"That's not an answer.""
"It's the only answer you're getting.""
Admiral Mercer stepped forward.
"Mr. Harrington, I recommend that you refrain from discussing the investigation with Captain Harrington.""
Richard turned on him.
"You don't have authority over my family.""
"No," Mercer replied.
"But I do have a responsibility to ensure that an officer who has been threatened is safe.""
"Threatened?"" My father scoffed.
"Celeste made an emotional remark.""
"She told her sister she should have stayed away.""
"She was upset.""
"Then she fled the building.""
Richard's mouth tightened.
He looked toward the corridor, then back at me.
Something in his expression made my stomach turn.
He was not surprised by Celeste's behavior.
He was worried about what she might say.
I stepped closer.
"Dad, did you know she was involved with this company?""
He looked directly at me.
"No.""
It was a simple answer.
But his eyes moved toward the folder before he said it.
I saw the movement.
So did Mercer.
Neither of us commented.
My father straightened his jacket.
"I'm leaving.""
"Richard," my mother whispered, "you can't just walk away.""
"Watch me.""
He turned toward the door.
As he passed me, he stopped.
For one second, I thought he might apologize.
Instead, he leaned close enough that only I could hear him.
"You have no idea what you've just done to this family.""
I met his eyes.
"Then perhaps you should have told me the truth before someone died.""
His face went rigid.
He walked away without another word.
Evan remained behind.
He looked shaken, and for the first time that night, he seemed less interested in defending our family name than in understanding what had happened.
"Caroline," he said, "I need to ask you something.""
"What?""
"Did Dad know about your injuries?""
I stared at him.
"What kind of question is that?""
"Just answer me.""
"I sent him a letter from the hospital. I explained that I had been injured in an operation. I told him I was recovering.""
Evan's brow furrowed.
"What hospital?""
"Naval Medical Center San Diego.""
He shook his head slowly.
"Dad told us you had refused treatment and disappeared.""
My chest tightened.
"What?""
"He said you were angry because he wouldn't finance some career change. He said you'd left the country.""
I couldn't speak.
For five years, my family had believed I had abandoned them.
My father had given them a story, and every one of them had accepted it because it was easier than asking me.
"Did you ever try to contact me?"" I asked.
Evan looked away.
"Once.""
"When?""
"Three years ago. I called the number you gave me in your last letter.""
"What happened?""
"Dad answered.""
My stomach dropped.
"What did he say?""
Evan rubbed his forehead.
"He said you'd been discharged and didn't want to speak to any of us. He told me not to bother you.""
I stared at my brother.
"You never called again?""
He swallowed.
"No.""
"Why?""
His voice became small.
"Because I believed him.""
The silence between us was unbearable.
I wanted to scream at him.
I wanted to ask how a man who could manage hundreds of employees had been unable to question his own father's story.
But I was too tired.
"Then you should have tried harder," I said.
Evan nodded.
"I know.""
It was the first honest thing I had heard from him all evening.
Commander Lewis returned a few minutes later.
"Captain, we haven't located your sister. Hotel security has confirmed that she exited through the underground garage.""
"Did she leave alone?""
"We're reviewing the footage.""
Mercer glanced at the commander.
"Please ensure the relevant recordings are preserved.""
"Yes, Admiral.""
My mother rose from her chair.
"I need to speak to Caroline.""
I shook my head.
"Not tonight.""
"Please, sweetheart.""
She reached for my hand.
I stepped back.
Her face crumpled.
"I know I failed you.""
I hadn't expected those words.
For a moment, the years between us seemed to collapse.
I remembered being twelve, sitting at the kitchen table while she taught me how to sew a button onto my school uniform. I remembered her brushing my hair before my first school dance. I remembered falling asleep on her shoulder during a thunderstorm.
Then I remembered the hospital room.
The telephone beside my bed.
The birthday that passed without a call.
The returned letters.
"Mom," I said, "I needed you when I couldn't lift my own arm. I needed you when I woke up screaming because I thought I was drowning. I needed you when Daniel's wife asked me whether her husband had suffered, and I had to tell her I didn't know.""
Tears slipped down her cheeks.
"I didn't know you were going through that.""
"You could have known.""
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
She looked at the floor.
"Your father said you were unstable. He said contacting you would make things worse.""
I felt something inside me crack.
"So you believed him.""
"I thought I was protecting you.""
"From your own mother?""
She covered her mouth.
I couldn't bear to look at her.
Mercer quietly opened the door.
"Captain, your room is ready. We can leave whenever you're prepared.""
I nodded.
Before I stepped into the corridor, Evan spoke.
"Caroline.""
I turned.
He held up his phone.
"I found something.""
He looked toward our mother, then lowered his voice.
"Celeste sent me a message three weeks ago. She asked whether I still had access to Dad's old office computer.""
My pulse quickened.
"Why?""
"She said she needed to retrieve some archived contracts.""
"Did you give her access?""
He nodded.
"She used my login. I didn't think anything of it.""
"Did you see what she retrieved?""
"No. But I remember the folder name.""
He opened the message and turned the screen toward me.
The words appeared in a blue text bubble.
*ARCHIVE 17 — NIGHT LANTERN*
My mouth went dry.
"Why would she access a folder named after my operation?""
Evan shook his head.
"I don't know.""
I looked at Mercer.
He had gone completely still.
"Commander Lewis," he said, "we need to document this immediately.""
Evan handed over the phone.
"I can provide the message history.""
"Please do," Lewis replied.
"Don't delete anything or contact your sister about it.""
Evan nodded.
I stared at the words on the screen.
Night Lantern.
The operation that had nearly killed me.
The operation that had taken Daniel.
The operation that appeared to be connected to my father's company.
And now, three weeks before my return, Celeste had accessed a folder containing its name.
I followed Mercer into the corridor.
"Admiral, what is Archive 17?""
"I don't know yet.""
"Can you find out?""
"We'll work through the appropriate channels.""
I stopped beside the elevator.
"No more half-answers.""
He turned toward me.
"Captain, I understand your frustration.""
"Do you? Because every time someone tells me they don't know, another piece of my life turns out to have been hidden from me.""
His expression softened.
"Then I'll tell you what I can. And when I cannot tell you something, I'll explain why.""
I studied him for a moment.
Then I nodded.
"All right.""
The elevator doors opened.
As we stepped inside, Commander Lewis's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and looked at Mercer.
"Admiral, we've located the vehicle Celeste used to leave the hotel.""
"Where?""
"The parking garage at a nearby office complex. The vehicle is empty.""
"Any sign of her?""
Lewis hesitated.
"There's something else. Security footage shows her entering the building before she came to the gala.""
"What building?""
He turned the phone so Mercer could see the image.
I recognized the glass tower immediately.
Harrington Maritime Group.
My father's headquarters.
Mercer studied the photograph.
"When was this recorded?""
"Forty minutes before the gala began.""
My stomach tightened.
Celeste had gone to the office before she came to the hotel.
She had accessed something.
Then she had deliberately humiliated me in front of two hundred people.
And when I mentioned Meridian Strategic Logistics, she had run.
"Admiral," I whispered, "I don't think she came to the gala just to hurt me.""
Mercer looked at me.
"What do you think she wanted?""
I thought about the torn blouse.
The cameras.
The way Celeste had kept her eyes fixed on my scars.
And the note that said I must never learn what happened.
"I think she wanted everyone looking at me.""
I swallowed.
"Because she needed to do something while nobody was watching her.""
The elevator doors opened.
Commander Lewis looked down at his phone again.
Then he said the words that made my blood run cold.
"Captain, the building's security system recorded an emergency access to the executive archive just six minutes after you arrived at the gala.""
May you like
He looked at me.
"The access was authorized using your father's credentials.""
