Chapter 6: The Voice on the Recording

I didn't leave Maya's bedside until she fell asleep.

Even then, I stood outside her room for several minutes, staring through the glass at the small rise and fall of her chest.

The doctors had identified the immediate surgical problem and were monitoring her closely. They were also working to identify the medication from the bottle. Until they knew exactly what she had taken, nobody could tell us whether it had contributed to her symptoms.

I needed answers.

But I wasn't going to leave my daughter alone just because somebody had threatened me with another mystery.

Daniel sat beside her bed while I went to speak with the police.

“Call me if she wakes up,” I told him.

“I will.””

“And don't let anyone give her anything from home.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Marcus, she's my niece. I won't let anyone put her at risk.””

I nodded and followed the officer to a small interview room near the hospital's security office.

Detective Harris introduced herself as a woman in her late thirties with short brown hair and a calm, direct manner. She placed a notebook on the table and asked me to describe my relationship with Ethan Cole.

I told her everything I knew.

How Claire had met him through an investment consultation. How he had visited our house. How I had trusted him because he seemed professional and because Claire had vouched for him.

Detective Harris listened without interruption.

“Did you authorize your wife to transfer forty thousand dollars from your joint savings?””

“No.””

“Did you sign the loan application?””

“No.””

“Did you know Ethan had a key to your home?””

“No.””

She wrote something down.

“Your wife says she believed Ethan was helping her invest the money. She also acknowledges that she continued communicating with him after she became suspicious of the transactions.””

“Why?””

“That's one of the questions we're investigating.””

I leaned forward.

“What did the recording say?””

Detective Harris took a breath.

“We've reviewed a portion of the file. It appears to contain an argument between your wife and Ethan. There are references to financial documents, a loan application, and your daughter overhearing their conversation.””

“Did you hear anything about the pills?””

“Not in the section we've reviewed.””

“Then what did you mean when you said the recording involved Maya's safety?””

The detective turned a page in her notebook.

“There's a point where a male voice says, 'She can't tell him what she saw.'' A female voice responds, 'She's a child. Leave her out of this.''”

I recognized Claire's voice immediately.

Detective Harris continued.

“Then the male voice says, 'You already involved her when you brought her downstairs.''”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“We don't know yet.””

“Was that Ethan?””

“We're working to establish the identities of everyone heard on the recording.””

I thought about Maya's account.

Ethan had entered the house. He had argued with Claire. Maya had seen them. A bottle had appeared afterward.

But there was something missing.

“Detective, my daughter said she heard Ethan tell Claire he had taken care of the money. She said he wanted my signature.””

“We'll ask her about that when she's medically able and if it's appropriate. We won't pressure her to give a statement while she's recovering.””

“Good.””

I sat back.

Then I remembered the message.

We need to establish whether you recognize the voice.

“Is there someone else on the recording?””

Detective Harris closed the folder.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

“We're not ready to identify that person until we've verified the recording and spoken to the individuals involved.””

I stared at her.

“Is it someone I know?””

She didn't answer directly.

“Mr. Reed, I understand how frightening this is. But I don't want you drawing conclusions from a recording that hasn't been fully authenticated.””

I rubbed my face.

“My daughter is in a hospital bed because she was too frightened to tell me what happened in our own house. I don't think I'm in danger of jumping to conclusions. I think I've spent too long ignoring the ones right in front of me.””

The detective regarded me for a moment.

Then she said, “That's understandable. But I still need you to be careful.””

She slid a printed still image across the table.

It showed the garage entrance on the night Ethan visited.

A man stood partly inside the frame, holding a leather folder.

I recognized him immediately.

My stomach dropped.

“That's Daniel.””

My brother.

Detective Harris nodded.

“Your brother's vehicle was also recorded entering the driveway that evening.””

I stared at the image.

“That doesn't make sense. Daniel told me he wasn't there.””

“We haven't established what he was doing at the property or whether he was present during the conversation. That's why we're asking.””

I shook my head.

“Daniel was at the hospital tonight. He came because I called him.””

“I'm aware.””

“He's my brother.””

“I understand.””

I looked at the image again.

Daniel had been standing near the garage entrance, his face turned away from the camera.

He was holding a leather folder.

The same kind Ethan had carried.

I felt as though somebody had opened a trapdoor beneath my feet.

“Did he give you a statement?””

“Not yet.””

I pushed the photograph away.

“I need to talk to him.””

Detective Harris shook her head.

“Please don't confront anyone about the recording. We need to speak with your brother ourselves.””

“Then do it.””

“We will.””

She paused.

“One more thing. The recording includes a statement that suggests someone knew your daughter had witnessed the argument before you did.””

“Claire?””

“We can't confirm that yet.””

I stood.

“Can I go?””

“Yes. We'll contact you when we have more information.””

I returned to Maya's room feeling as though I had walked into a nightmare that kept changing its shape.

Daniel stood beside the bed, reading something on his phone.

When he saw me, he put it away.

“Everything okay?””

I looked at him.

“Were you at my house on October 2?””

His expression changed.

“What?””

“The night Ethan came over. The garage camera recorded you.””

Daniel stared at me for a moment.

Then he looked toward Maya.

“Not here.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“That's exactly what Claire said.””

“Marcus, lower your voice.””

“Did you go to my house that night?””

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.

“Yes.””

The answer landed harder than I expected.

“Why?””

“I was dropping something off.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“A folder.””

“What was in it?””

“Documents.””

“What documents?””

Daniel glanced at Maya again.

“Can we talk outside?””

I wanted to refuse.

But Maya shifted in her sleep, and I forced myself to step into the hallway.

Daniel followed.

We stopped near a row of windows overlooking the hospital entrance.

“Tell me the truth,” I said.

He folded his arms.

“I went to your house because Claire called me. She said she needed help with a financial problem.””

“What kind of problem?””

“She told me Ethan had made a mistake with the investment account. She wanted me to look at some paperwork because she didn't want to worry you until she knew what was going on.””

“And you agreed?””

“I thought I was helping.””

“Did you know he was forging my signature?””

“No.””

“Did you know he had a key to my house?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I knew he had been there before.””

I stared at him.

“How many times?””

“I don't know.””

“Daniel.””

“Three or four, maybe.””

I stepped away from him.

“You knew a man I barely knew was entering my house, and you didn't tell me?””

“He was Claire's financial adviser.””

“That doesn't answer the question.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“I was trying to keep things from getting worse.””

I laughed once, without humor.

“That's what everyone keeps saying.””

He looked wounded.

“Marcus, I didn't know Maya was involved.””

“Did you see her that night?””

“No.””

“Did you hear the argument?””

“I heard voices when I came in, but I didn't go into the study.””

“Why not?””

“Because Claire told me it was private.””

I stared at him.

“And you left?””

“Yes.””

“Without telling me any of this?””

Daniel looked down.

“I thought it was a marital issue.””

I turned toward the window.

Outside, an ambulance pulled up to the entrance, its red lights flashing across the wet pavement.

My brother had always been the person I trusted most after my daughter.

We had grown up sharing a bedroom in a small house in Ohio. When our father died, Daniel helped me pay the funeral expenses. When I started my construction business, he worked weekends helping me repair equipment.

He had never betrayed me before.

At least, not in a way I had recognized.

“Did you give Ethan any documents with my signature?””

Daniel's head snapped up.

“No.””

“Did you see a loan application?””

He hesitated.

“I saw a draft.””

“What?””

“Claire asked me to look at it. I told her it didn't look right.””

My pulse quickened.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because she said she was checking it with a lawyer.””

“Did you see my signature?””

“Yes.””

“Was it real?””

Daniel looked at me.

“No.””

The hallway seemed to narrow.

“You knew someone had forged my signature, and you didn't tell me?””

“I didn't know who had done it. Claire said she'd handle it.””

I stared at him.

“You let me sleep in a house where somebody was trying to borrow money against it using my forged signature.””

Daniel's face reddened.

“I was wrong.””

“Yes. You were.””

He looked toward the recovery-room door.

“Marcus, I swear to you, I never wanted Maya to get hurt.””

“Neither did I.””

The words came out quieter than I intended.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“There is something I need to show you.””

He opened a message thread and handed it to me.

The first message was from Claire, dated October 2.

Can you bring the folder tonight? Ethan says he needs the final copy before tomorrow.

Daniel had replied:

I'll bring the draft. I'm not signing anything.

Claire's response had come two minutes later.

Please. I just need this finished before Marcus finds out.

I scrolled down.

There was another message from Daniel.

This isn't right. The signature doesn't match.

And Claire's answer:

I know. I'll fix it.

I looked up.

“You kept these?””

“I was worried something might happen.””

“You could have shown me weeks ago.””

“I know.””

I handed back the phone.

“Did you ever meet Ethan alone?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not that I remember.””

“Did you know Maya had been given pills?””

“No.””

“Did you know she was afraid to tell me what happened?””

Daniel's face changed.

“No, Marcus. I swear.””

I wanted to believe him.

But I had learned that night that a person's sincerity did not automatically make their story complete.

Before I could ask anything else, Nia approached us.

“Mr. Reed, Maya is awake. She's asking for you.””

I returned to the room.

Maya looked tired but more alert than before. The monitor beside her bed beeped steadily, and a nurse was checking her IV.

When she saw me, she reached for my hand.

“Daddy, is Uncle Daniel here?””

“Yes.””

“Can he come in?””

I hesitated.

“Do you feel comfortable with that?””

She nodded.

I went into the hallway and brought Daniel to the doorway.

He stood several feet from the bed.

“Hey, kiddo.””

Maya stared at him.

Then she asked a question that made my brother go completely pale.

“Uncle Daniel, why did you give Mom the papers that night?””

Daniel's mouth opened.

No words came out.

I turned toward him.

“You told me you brought a folder.””

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

“I saw you in the study. Ethan was there, too. You were all talking about Dad's signature.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Maya, sweetheart, I didn't know you were there.””

“But you knew I heard you.””

He stopped.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Maya gripped my hand.

“Uncle Daniel told Mom not to worry because Dad would never find out.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. That's not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?”” I asked.

He looked at me, his eyes wet.

“I meant I would help her explain the paperwork.””

Maya began crying.

“You said the papers would make Dad responsible for the money.””

Daniel went completely still.

I felt something inside me break.

“What papers?”” I demanded.

Daniel looked from me to Maya.

Then he lowered his head.

“The loan application.””

My heart pounded.

“You said you didn't sign it.””

“I didn't.””

“Then why would you tell Claire I'd be responsible?””

“Because Ethan told us the loan would be secured against the house, and he said the bank needed a co-borrower.””

I stared at him.

“Co-borrower?””

Daniel nodded.

“He told Claire the application was incomplete. He said if you signed it, the debt would be legal.””

“And you knew the signature on the draft was forged.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you help?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“Because I thought I could stop it before anything happened.””

I took a step toward him.

“You don't get to gamble with my daughter's home because you think you can fix a crime after the fact.””

“I know.””

“No, you don't.””

Daniel covered his face with both hands.

For a moment, I thought he might finally tell me everything.

Instead, he looked up and said, “Marcus, there is something else you need to know about Ethan.””

I waited.

Daniel's voice shook.

“He didn't come to our house because of Claire's investment account.””

“Then why did he come?””

My brother looked toward Maya.

Then back at me.

“Because he was looking for something your father left behind.””

I stared at him.

“Our father has been dead for eleven years.””

“I know.””

“What could Ethan possibly want from him?””

Daniel swallowed hard.

“An old property deed.””

I felt the room tilt.

The house we lived in had belonged to our father before he sold it years ago. But there was another property, a small parcel of land outside Columbus, that our father had left to Daniel and me jointly.

We had never developed it. We had barely discussed it since the funeral.

“What does that land have to do with Ethan?””

Daniel looked down.

“He believes there's something valuable buried in the paperwork. Something our father discovered before he died.””

“What?””

“I don't know.””

I stared at him.

“Then why would he risk everything to get it?””

Daniel's phone began vibrating.

He glanced at the screen.

His face turned white.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He slowly handed me the phone.

A message from an unknown number filled the screen.

You were supposed to keep Marcus out of this.

A second message appeared.

Now that Maya remembers, the deal is over.

Then a third.

Tell him what your father hid, or I'll tell him myself.

I looked at Daniel.

He was trembling.

And for the first time, I understood that the secret threatening my family might have begun long before Claire ever met Ethan Cole.

May you like

It might have begun with my father.

And whatever he had hidden, someone was willing to endanger my daughter to keep it buried.
