Chapter 2: The Footage Nobody Was Supposed to See

For several seconds, the four of us stood frozen on the landing.

The only sound was Ethan calling from downstairs, asking whether he could have another piece of cake.

The ordinary little voice made everything feel even more unreal.

Daniel finally turned toward me.

“Go downstairs.””

I stared at him.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me. Get away from my wife.””

“Daniel, the camera recorded everything.””

“Then we can deal with that later.””

“Later?”” Claire repeated.

“Dad has been accused of something serious. We should look at the footage now.””

Mia wiped her face with the back of her hand.

“I don't want to watch myself being humiliated.””

Claire folded her arms.

“You just accused Dad of attacking you. This isn't about humiliation anymore.””

“Claire,” Daniel snapped, “stay out of this.””

“It's our father you're talking about.””

“And Mia is my wife!””

He said it so loudly that Ethan called from downstairs again.

“Dad? Is Grandpa okay?””

Daniel shut his eyes for a moment, then called back, “Everything's fine, buddy. Stay with Lily.””

His voice softened instantly.

That frightened me more than his shouting.

He could still control his voice. He could still choose kindness when he wanted to.

He simply wasn't choosing it for me.

I straightened my glasses.

“Daniel, I will not argue with you about what happened. The footage will speak for itself.””

He laughed bitterly.

“You really think a camera proves everything?””

“No. But it can prove whether I touched your wife.””

Mia stepped closer to him.

“Daniel, let's go home.””

He looked down at her.

“Baby, we aren't leaving until we understand what happened.””

Her eyes flickered toward the camera.

“But you already understand,” she whispered.

I heard her.

So did Claire.

Daniel appeared not to notice.

He pulled his phone from his pocket and called someone.

“Mark? It's me. I need you to come over.””

He paced toward the staircase.

“It's a family emergency. My father did something to Mia.””

Claire's mouth fell open.

“Daniel! You don't even know what happened!””

He turned away from us.

“Yes. I know what my wife told me.””

Then he lowered his voice.

“No, don't bring anyone yet. Just come. I need someone who understands this sort of situation.””

He ended the call.

“Who was that?”” I asked.

“None of your business.””

“It's my home.””

“And this is my wife!””

His voice echoed down the hallway.

I felt the sting on my cheek again, but the pain had become strangely distant. I was watching my son and realizing that the boy I remembered had been replaced by a man who could strike his father and immediately search for someone to justify it.

Claire took my arm.

“Dad, let's go downstairs. We can review the recording on your computer.””

Mia moved between us.

“No!””

The word came out so sharply that even Daniel turned.

She swallowed and tried again.

“I mean, please. I don't want the children hearing about this.””

Claire stared at her.

“Then we can check it privately.””

“Why are you so determined to watch it?””

“Because you're accusing our father of attacking you.””

Mia's eyes filled with tears again.

“Fine. If that's what you want.””

But she didn't move.

I noticed that her phone screen had lit up.

A message appeared.

She read it, then quickly turned the phone facedown against her leg.

I couldn't see the sender.

I could see the change in her expression.

She had been frightened before.

Now she looked furious.

Daniel noticed too.

“Who texted you?””

“No one.””

“Mia.””

“It's nothing.””

He held out his hand.

“Let me see.””

She pulled the phone away.

“Don't start controlling me because your father has made this situation worse.””

Daniel's hand dropped.

It was the first time I had seen her turn his anger against him so effectively.

Claire noticed it too.

“Let's go downstairs,” she said firmly.

“All of us.””

We descended in silence.

The dining room looked painfully beautiful. The white roses stood in the center of the table, and the roast beef remained beneath its silver cover. Four plates had been pushed aside, and a small piece of cake sat untouched on Ethan's plate.

He was standing beside Lily, holding his paper airplane.

“Grandpa, why is your face red?””

I knelt slowly in front of him.

“Grandpa bumped into something.””

Ethan looked past me toward Daniel.

“Did Dad do it?””

Nobody answered.

My grandson's face changed.

“Dad?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Ethan, go upstairs with your sister.””

“But—”

“Now.””

Lily took her brother's hand.

Before leaving, she looked at me.

“Grandpa, are you coming?””

“In a little while, sweetheart.””

She hesitated, then followed Ethan up the stairs.

When their footsteps faded, I led everyone into my study.

The computer sat on a wooden desk beside Margaret's old reading lamp. Six months earlier, a technician had installed a security system connected to a small monitor. I had barely used it since the initial setup.

I sat down and entered my password.

Daniel stood behind me.

Mia remained near the door.

Claire pulled a chair beside my desk.

“Can you find the upstairs recording?”” she asked.

“I think so.””

The system displayed a timeline of recorded activity.

I selected the time just before I had gone upstairs.

A small loading symbol appeared.

Mia began twisting her wedding ring.

“Maybe we should wait until tomorrow,” she said.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Why?””

“Because everyone is upset.””

“Then let's settle it.””

She stared at him.

“You really want to see your father standing over me while I'm crying?””

“If that's what happened, yes.””

“And if it isn't?””

The question hung in the room.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

I clicked the recording.

The screen showed the upstairs landing from a high angle. The image was clear enough to distinguish the pattern of the wallpaper and the dark wooden railing.

The timestamp read 7:43 p.m.

I watched myself enter the frame carrying nothing but my glasses and a handkerchief. I stopped several feet away from Mia.

The audio was faint, but the words were understandable.

“Are you looking for Daniel?”” the recording showed me asking.

Mia shook her head.

“Are you feeling all right?””

“I'm fine.””

Then I watched myself take one step forward and stop as Mia backed away.

I raised both hands.

I could hear my own voice saying, “All right. I'm staying here.””

Claire exhaled.

“Keep watching.””

Mia moved toward the window. She glanced up at the camera.

Then she turned back toward me.

The next few seconds unfolded exactly as I remembered them.

She tore her blouse.

She pulled at her hair.

She screamed.

She threw herself against the wall and slid to the floor.

I never touched her.

I never came within arm's reach.

Daniel leaned forward, his face draining of color.

“Stop it.””

Nobody moved.

He spoke louder.

“Stop the recording!””

I paused it.

For a long moment, he stared at the frozen image of his wife sitting on the floor.

Then he turned to Mia.

“What the hell was that?””

Mia's mouth opened, but no words came out.

Claire stood.

“You accused Dad of attacking you. He never touched you.””

“I was scared!”” Mia shouted.

“Scared of what?”” I asked.

She looked at me with open hatred.

“You were intimidating me.””

“I asked whether you were all right.””

“You were standing over me!””

“The recording shows otherwise.””

“Cameras don't show everything!””

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

“Mia, tell me what's going on.””

She walked toward him.

“Your father has been making me uncomfortable for years.””

I stared at her.

“Years?””

“You always made comments about my appearance. You always wanted me alone. You always made me feel as though I owed you something.””

I felt a chill settle in my chest.

“Did you forget that I helped pay for your father's surgery?””

Her eyes flashed.

“There it is. The money. You always bring up the money.””

“You brought up years of accusations. I'm asking what I did.””

“You know what you did!””

“No, Mia. I don't.””

Daniel stepped between us again, but this time he didn't look angry.

He looked confused.

“Maybe the footage doesn't show what happened before Dad came upstairs.””

Claire shook her head.

“We were all downstairs together. Mia was fine until she went upstairs.””

Mia turned on her.

“You weren't watching me every second!””

“Neither was Dad. But he didn't touch you.””

Mia looked at the monitor.

For one fleeting moment, I thought she might finally admit the truth.

Instead, she pointed at the screen.

“You're all focusing on the wrong thing.””

“What does that mean?”” Daniel asked.

She swallowed.

Then she said the words that made the room go silent.

“The camera wasn't supposed to be recording tonight.””

I turned slowly in my chair.

“Why not?””

Mia looked at Daniel.

He stared back at her.

And for the first time that evening, I saw fear enter my son's eyes.

Not fear of me.

Fear of something he hadn't known was coming.

“Mia,” he whispered.

“What did you do?””

She shook her head.

“Nothing.””

But the monitor was still displaying the recording timeline.

I noticed a small red marker near the bottom of the screen.

A second camera.

The one I had installed in the downstairs hallway.

I clicked it.

The recording showed the dining room entrance, the kitchen doorway, and the stairs.

It also showed Mia standing alone in the hallway twelve minutes before I went upstairs.

She was holding her phone against her ear.

And she was speaking to someone.

I turned up the volume.

Her voice came through the speakers, clear enough for all of us to hear.

“It's tonight,” she whispered.

“He's finally going to do it.””

Then she paused, listening.

“No. Daniel believes me. He'll believe whatever I tell him.””

Another pause.

Her face turned toward the staircase.

“And once the police get involved, Thomas won't have a choice.””

I stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stared at his wife as if he had never seen her before.

Claire covered her mouth.

I felt something cold settle deep in my bones.

“Who were you talking to?”” I asked.

Mia didn't answer.

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Mia. Who was on the phone?””

She backed away.

Then her eyes moved toward the computer screen, and her lips parted.

“That's not the recording you think it is.””

I looked at the timestamp.

The file had been created before dinner.

And beneath the recording was a line of text I had never seen before.

*External device connected.*

Someone had accessed my security system.

May you like

Someone had been watching us.

And Mia knew exactly who it was.
