Chapter 6: The Man Behind My Success
Victor Hale.
I stared at the name on my phone until the letters stopped looking real.
Victor Hale.
The man who shook my hand when I became a junior associate.
The man who told me I had something special.
The man who stayed late with me when everyone else went home.
The man who once told me, “Daniel, talent is rare. But loyalty is rarer.””
For twelve years, I believed he saw something in me.
I believed he had discovered me.
I believed he had helped me climb because he respected my ambition.
Now I was looking at a document showing something completely different.
He didn’t discover me.
He owned part of me.
And I never knew.
I called Claire back.
She answered after one ring.
“You saw it.””
“Yes.””
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I closed my eyes.
“Tell me everything.””
A long silence followed.
Then she said:
“You’re finally asking.””
The words hurt because they were true.
For years, Claire had asked questions.
For years, people had tried to tell me things.
And I had always assumed I was the smartest person in the room.
Now I was discovering that I might have been the easiest person to manipulate.
“When did you find out about Victor?””
Claire sighed.
“Six months ago.””
“Six months?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
Her voice softened.
“Do you remember our anniversary dinner?””
I frowned.
There had been so many dinners.
So many events.
So many moments where I was physically present but mentally somewhere else.
“Yes.””
“You spent most of it answering emails.””
I didn’t respond.
“After dinner, I told you something was wrong.””
I remembered.
A restaurant downtown.
Candlelight.
Claire staring at me across the table.
Me checking a message from the office.
I remembered telling her, “Can we not do this tonight?””
At the time, I thought I was avoiding an argument.
Now I wondered if I had been avoiding the truth.
“What did you try to tell me?””
“That Victor wasn’t just your mentor.””
I sat silently.
“What did you find?””
“Records.””
“What kind of records?””
“Old ownership documents. Transfers. Private agreements.””
My heart beat faster.
“And?””
“And Victor owned part of the company before you became partner.””
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“It’s not.””
I looked at the registration document again.
“How?””
“Your father helped arrange it.””
I stood from the driver’s seat.
“So my father and Victor worked together?””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
“Longer than you know.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Claire, why didn’t you tell me six months ago?””
She was quiet.
Then:
“Because I was afraid.””
The answer surprised me.
“Afraid of what?””
“Of you.””
I froze.
Not because I thought she feared me physically.
Because I understood what she meant.
She was afraid I would reject anything that challenged the person I believed I was.
“You thought I wouldn’t believe you.””
“I knew you wouldn’t.””
The honesty hurt.
“You think that little of me?””
“No.””
A pause.
“I think that much of your pride.””
I looked away.
Because I couldn’t argue.
The next morning, I went to my office.
Not the way I usually arrived.
Usually, I walked through those doors with confidence.
People greeted me.
Assistants smiled.
Employees stood straighter.
My reputation entered the building before I did.
But that morning, everything felt different.
Because I was looking at the same people wondering who knew.
Who was pretending.
Who was waiting for me to discover the truth.
My assistant, Rachel, stood when she saw me.
“Good morning, Daniel.””
“Is Victor here?””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But again, I noticed.
Everyone had become better at hiding things than I was.
“He’s in his office.””
I walked away.
No announcement.
No preparation.
Just straight toward the man who had shaped my career.
Victor’s door was open.
He looked up from his desk.
And smiled.
“Daniel.””
That smile almost made me angry.
Almost.
“Close the door.””
The smile faded.
He did.
“What happened?””
I placed the document on his desk.
His eyes moved down.
I watched carefully.
For one second.
One tiny second.
Fear appeared.
Then it disappeared.
“What is this?””
“You tell me.””
Victor leaned back.
“Where did you get this?””
“Everyone asks that.””
“Because it matters.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“What matters is why my name is on a company agreement I never knew existed.””
Silence.
Victor looked at me.
“You talked to your father.””
“I talked to Claire.””
That got a reaction.
Not a big one.
But enough.
His jaw tightened.
“Claire.””
“Yes.””
“She should not have involved herself.””
I laughed.
“She was my wife.””
“She was emotional.””
The sentence made my blood boil.
“Don’t.””
Victor looked surprised.
“Don’t what?””
“Don’t talk about her like she was irrational because she found something you wanted hidden.””
His expression hardened.
“Daniel, you have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
“Then explain it.””
He walked around the desk.
“You think this is about ownership?””
“Isn’t it?””
“No.””
He stopped in front of me.
“This is about protection.””
That word again.
Everyone used it.
Protection.
Like they were doing me a favor.
Like hiding my own life from me was some kind of gift.
“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.””
“Because we did.””
“No.””
My voice lowered.
“You protected yourselves.””
Victor looked away.
For the first time, he looked tired.
“Your father should never have let you know.””
“Why?””
“Because you weren’t ready.””
I almost smiled.
“Not ready?””
“You were young.””
“Twelve years ago?””
“Yes.””
“I was an adult.””
“You were ambitious.””
“That’s not a crime.””
“No.””
Victor looked at me.
“But ambition without control destroys people.””
I stared at him.
“You sound exactly like my father.””
“Because your father understood reality.””
“And you?””
“I understood you.””
The answer was quiet.
Too quiet.
“What does that mean?””
Victor sat back down.
“It means I saw your potential before anyone else did.””
I said nothing.
“I saw how badly you wanted recognition.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“It doesn’t.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
Because Victor wasn’t denying anything.
He was choosing what to admit.
“You knew about Bennett & Cross.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Vanessa.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Claire was involved.””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“And you still hired me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Victor looked at the city outside his window.
“Because you were the only person who could make that account successful.””
“That’s not the reason.””
He didn’t answer.
“Why?””
Finally, he said:
“Because your father asked me to.””
The room became silent.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“To use me?””
Victor’s expression changed.
“No.””
“To build his reputation?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Victor looked at me.
“To give you the life you always wanted.””
I shook my head.
“That isn’t an answer.””
“It is.””
“No, it’s an excuse.””
I picked up the document.
“My entire career started with a lie.””
Victor’s voice softened.
“Daniel.””
I stopped.
“You keep thinking the lie was that you weren’t talented.””
I turned.
“What?””
“That’s not true.””
He walked closer.
“The lie was that you had to do everything alone.””
I didn’t speak.
“Your father helped you. Your brother helped you. Claire helped you.””
He paused.
“And I helped you.””
The words sounded almost comforting.
Almost.
Until I remembered one thing.
“If everyone helped me…”
I looked at him.
“Why did everyone hide it?””
Victor had no answer.
And that was the first time I saw something I never expected.
Victor Hale was afraid.
Not of losing money.
Not of losing power.
Of losing control.
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
A message from an unknown number.
One sentence.
Ask Victor why he erased my name from the original agreement.
My eyes moved back to Victor.
“Who is this?””
He saw the message.
And his face changed.
Completely.
Not controlled.
Not professional.
Terrified.
“Daniel…”
I held up the phone.
“Who sent this?””
Victor didn’t answer.
“Who?””
He looked at the screen again.
Then whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
Because whatever was on that phone wasn’t just another secret.
It was something Victor believed was gone forever.
“Daniel…”
His voice dropped.
“The person who sent that message…”
May you like
He swallowed.
“Died twelve years ago.””
