Chapter 3: The Daughter Who Knew Too Much

I called Maria before Vanessa could say another word.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“Hello, Mr. Whitmore?””

Her voice sounded small and tired.

“Maria, it's Daniel.””

There was a pause.

“Yes, sir.””

“I need you to come back to the house.””

Another pause followed.

“Sir, I don't think that's a good idea.””

I closed my eyes.

“I watched the security footage.””

I heard her inhale sharply.

“Then you know what happened.””

“Yes.””

“Do you believe me now?””

The question was quiet.

It was also the most painful thing anyone had said to me that day.

“Yes, Maria,” I whispered.

“I believe you.””

She didn't respond.

“I was wrong,” I continued.

“I accused you without hearing your side. I suspended you. I treated you terribly, and I am deeply sorry.””

On the other end, I heard a door close.

“Mr. Whitmore, I love Sophie,” she said.

“You know that. I would never put her in danger.””

“I know.””

“No, sir. I don't think you do. If you did, you wouldn't have believed I could do something like that.””

I had no defense.

She was right.

“I want to make this right,” I said.

“How?””

“I'll pay for your medical treatment. Your job is waiting for you if you want it. And I'll make sure everyone knows the truth.””

Maria was silent for several seconds.

Then she asked, “Does Mrs. Whitmore know you called me?””

I looked toward the nursery doorway.

Vanessa was standing in the hall, watching me.

“Yes,” I answered.

“Then please be careful, sir.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why would you say that?””

“Because what happened today wasn't the first time she tried to make me look like a danger to Sophie.””

I sat down slowly on the edge of the nursery chair.

“What do you mean?””

“I can't explain everything over the phone. I need to think. I'm still shaken.””

“Maria, please. Tell me what you know.””

“I'll come tomorrow morning. But only if you promise me something.””

“Anything.””

“Don't leave Sophie alone with her until you understand what happened.””

I looked at my baby sleeping in the crib.

“I promise.””

Maria ended the call.

I lowered the phone.

Vanessa immediately stepped into the room.

“What did she say?””

I studied her face.

“She said she'll come tomorrow.””

“Good,” Vanessa replied.

“You can apologize, give her some money, and send her on her way. We don't need her working here anymore.””

I stared at her.

“Did you hear what I just said?””

Vanessa blinked.

“What?””

“She saved our daughter.””

“And I'm grateful!””

“Are you?””

Her jaw tightened.

“Daniel, don't start treating me like a criminal because of one mistake.””

“One mistake?””

She threw her hands into the air.

“What do you want from me? Should I get down on my knees? Should I beg for forgiveness in front of Emily?””

“No. I want the truth.””

“You have it.””

“Then tell me why you deleted the footage.””

Vanessa went pale.

For the first time since I had known her, she seemed unable to find a suitable expression.

“I didn't delete anything.””

“The security company says someone manually deleted the recording.””

“Then someone made a mistake.””

“The recording was deleted at 3:24. You were standing in front of the camera at that time.””

She looked toward Emily.

“You did this, didn't you?””

Emily stiffened.

“What?””

“You've been trying to turn Daniel against me since the day Sophie was born. You hate that she's his priority now.””

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“Stop saying that!””

“It's true!””

“No,” Emily said, her voice breaking.

“You keep saying it because you know Dad will feel guilty enough to believe you.””

I stepped between them.

“Vanessa, go downstairs.””

She stared at me.

“Excuse me?””

“Go downstairs. I need to speak to my daughter.””

“You're choosing her over your wife?””

“I'm asking you to leave the room.””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

Then she looked at Emily and smiled.

It was a small smile.

A private one.

“You should be careful what you wish for,” she whispered.

Emily went still.

I caught the exchange.

“What was that supposed to mean?””

Vanessa turned toward me.

“Nothing. I'm tired, Daniel. I need to lie down.””

She walked away without another word.

I waited until her footsteps faded before turning to Emily.

“Sit down.””

She shook her head.

“I don't want to.””

“Emily, please.””

She lowered herself into the chair beside the crib.

I sat across from her.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked the question I should have asked months ago.

“How long has Vanessa been treating you this way?””

Emily stared at the floor.

“Since before Sophie was born.””

My chest tightened.

“What do you mean?””

“She started small. She'd tell me I was irresponsible. She'd say I was too old to need your attention, then complain whenever I spent time with friends.

If I got a good grade, she'd say I was showing off. If I got a bad grade, she'd tell you I was becoming lazy.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Emily gave a humorless laugh.

“I did.””

I looked away.

“I know.””

“No, Dad. You don't.””

Her voice rose.

“Remember when I asked you to come to my school recital last spring? You said you had an important meeting. Vanessa told you I hadn't practiced enough and that I didn't really want you there.””

I remembered.

I had been sitting in my office when Vanessa called, saying Emily had changed her mind about the recital.

I had believed her.

“Emily—”

“You promised you'd come.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“I stood on that stage and looked at the empty seat where you were supposed to be.””

I felt something inside me crack.

“I am sorry.””

“You always say that after something happens.””

I had no answer.

Emily glanced at Sophie.

“When she was born, I thought things would get better. I loved her immediately. I wanted to help with everything. But Vanessa kept telling me I was holding her wrong, feeding her wrong, touching her too much.””

“Why?””

“Because she didn't want me near her.””

“That doesn't make sense.””

Emily reached for her phone.

“That's what I thought, too.””

She opened a folder and showed me several screenshots.

They were messages between Vanessa and an unknown contact.

The first one read:

*I can't keep pretending everything is fine. He needs to understand that this family is falling apart.*

The reply said:

*Then make him see it. You can't keep waiting for him to notice.*

Another message appeared beneath it.

*If Emily stays, this will never work.*

I looked at my daughter.

“Who is this person?””

“I don't know. Vanessa deletes the conversations, but I managed to save a few screenshots when she left her tablet unlocked.””

“Why didn't you show me these?””

“Because I was scared you wouldn't believe me.””

I stared at the messages.

The wording was vague enough to mean several things.

But the last screenshot made my stomach twist.

It was a message from Vanessa, sent two nights earlier.

*Once the housekeeper is gone, nobody will be left to contradict me. Then Daniel will finally have to listen.*

I read it twice.

The housekeeper.

Maria.

My daughter had not simply stumbled upon a video.

She had been gathering evidence because she feared something was wrong in our home.

I looked at Emily.

“Do you have more?””

She nodded.

“There's something else.””

She unlocked another file.

This time, it wasn't a screenshot.

It was a short audio recording.

“Where did you get this?”” I asked.

“Vanessa's tablet. I heard her talking on the phone in the study last night. She didn't know I was upstairs.””

Emily pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then Vanessa's voice came through the speaker.

“I don't care what Daniel thinks. If Maria keeps interfering, I'll make sure she's gone by the end of the week.””

A man's voice answered.

“You're pushing too hard.””

“I don't have a choice.””

“You always have a choice, Vanessa.””

“No. Not anymore. If Daniel finds out what happened before Sophie was born, everything will fall apart.””

The recording ended.

I sat frozen.

Before Sophie was born?

What could possibly have happened that Vanessa was so desperate to hide?

I looked at Emily.

“Did you hear anything else?””

She shook her head.

“But there's something I haven't told you.””

I waited.

“Last week, I heard Vanessa arguing with someone in the garage. I couldn't see who it was, but I heard her say that Sophie was the only thing keeping you from leaving.””

My throat went dry.

“What?””

Emily nodded slowly.

“She said, 'If he ever learns the truth, I'll lose everything.'' Then the other person asked whether she was sure the plan would work.””

I stood up.

“Why didn't you tell me this before?””

“Because I didn't know what it meant!””

She began crying again.

“I thought maybe I was misunderstanding. I thought maybe I was making everything worse because I hated the way she treated me.””

I crossed the room and knelt in front of her.

“You were right to tell me.””

She looked at me uncertainly.

“You believe me?””

I took her hands.

“Yes.””

For the first time that afternoon, Emily allowed herself to cry without trying to hide it.

I held my daughter while she trembled.

Behind us, Sophie slept peacefully in her crib, unaware that the world around her was changing.

I wanted to believe that the video was the end of the nightmare.

I wanted to believe that Vanessa had made one terrible decision and that I could protect my daughters by removing her from the house.

But the audio recording had opened a door I didn't know existed.

And I was beginning to suspect that the stroller incident wasn't the real secret.

It was only the first one I had caught her hiding.

That evening, I asked Vanessa to meet me in the study.

She arrived wearing a silk robe, her hair neatly brushed, her face composed.

She even brought me a cup of coffee.

“You look exhausted,” she said, setting it on my desk.

“You should get some rest.””

I didn't touch it.

“We need to talk about the messages.””

Her hand stopped halfway to the chair.

“What messages?””

“The ones you sent about Maria. The recording Emily found. The conversation about what happened before Sophie was born.””

For a moment, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.

Then she laughed softly.

“Emily has been spying on me?””

“Answer the question.””

She sat down.

“Daniel, your daughter is going through a difficult period. She's angry, she's jealous, and she's desperate for attention. She's taken innocent conversations and twisted them into something sinister.””

“Did you push the stroller?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“But I told you I didn't mean to hurt Sophie.””

“Did you lie about Maria?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I panicked.””

“Did you delete the footage?””

“No.””

“Did you tell someone that if I learned the truth, you'd lose everything?””

She looked away.

I leaned forward.

“What truth, Vanessa?””

She began twisting the wedding ring on her finger.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she looked up.

“Before I answer that, Daniel, there's something you need to understand about Emily.””

My stomach tightened.

“What about her?””

Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.

“She's not the only person in this house who has been keeping secrets.””

She reached into the pocket of her robe and placed a folded piece of paper on my desk.

I opened it.

It was a printed photograph of Emily standing outside a medical clinic, speaking to a man I had never seen before.

On the back, Vanessa had written six words.

*Ask your daughter who Sophie’s real father is.*
