Chapter 9: The Woman Who Raised Me
Olivia was sitting in an interview room when Daniel arrived at the police station.
She wore the same blouse she had been wearing when Margaret fell, but the fabric was wrinkled and one sleeve had a faint smear of blood near the cuff.
Her hair had come loose.
For the first time since Daniel had met her, she looked as though she had no idea how to present herself to the world.
A female officer stood outside the door.
“Mr. Bennett, you can speak with your wife for ten minutes. Detective Harris will remain nearby.””
Daniel nodded.
He entered the room and sat across from Olivia.
She looked up immediately.
“Daniel.””
He didn't answer.
Her eyes moved to the evidence bag in his hand.
“You found the study.””
“Yes.””
“Did you find the box?””
“Yes.””
She swallowed.
“Then you know.””
“I know some things.””
Daniel placed the photograph of the newborn on the table.
Olivia stared at it.
Then she began to cry.
“I'm sorry.””
He looked at her.
“Which part?””
She covered her mouth.
“All of it.””
“That's not an answer.””
“I know.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Did you know I was adopted?””
Olivia shook her head.
“No.””
“Did you know Margaret wasn't my biological mother?””
“I suspected something was wrong, but I didn't know what.””
“Did you know my father believed I was his son?””
“Yes.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“When?””
Olivia closed her eyes.
“The night I found the first photograph.””
He stared at her.
“How long have you known?””
“Almost three years.””
Daniel stood abruptly.
“Three years?””
Olivia flinched.
“I didn't know the whole story!””
“You knew enough to keep quiet.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you would leave me.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You stole from my son, forged my signature, and pushed my mother down a staircase. You think the truth about my birth would have been the thing that made me leave?””
Olivia looked down.
“I don't know anymore.””
He sat again, exhausted.
“Start at the beginning.””
She took a shaky breath.
“After we got engaged, I went through some of my mother's old belongings. I found a letter from David Bennett. He wrote that he had arranged for a child to be raised under another name.””
Daniel watched her carefully.
“I didn't understand it at first. Then I saw your father's photograph and recognized the name.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I thought it might be a coincidence.””
“And when you realized it wasn't?””
Olivia looked away.
“My mother called me. She said she had made a mistake. She said the child she had been told was dead had survived.””
Daniel's throat tightened.
“Did she tell you who the child was?””
“Not then.””
“When?””
“After we married.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
The silence between them seemed endless.
Finally, he asked, “Why did you marry me?””
Olivia's lips trembled.
“I loved you.””
“That's not what I asked.””
She looked at him.
“At first, I wanted to know the truth about my father. I wanted to understand why my mother had lied to me. When I met you, I realized you were David Bennett's son.””
Daniel stared at her.
“So you approached me because of my father.””
“I approached you because I was curious. I stayed because I fell in love with you.””
“And then?””
Olivia looked down at her hands.
“Then I found out about the money.””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“What money?””
“The trust. Your father's estate. The accounts Margaret managed.””
“You stole from me because of an inheritance?””
“No. I didn't know about the inheritance when we married.””
“But you found out.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Olivia hesitated.
“About a year after our wedding.””
Daniel waited.
She continued.
“Your father left money in a private account. It was supposed to be divided between his children once their identities were confirmed. Margaret had control of the account because she was the trustee.””
Daniel stared at her.
“My father left money for me?””
“And for another child.””
“Who?””
Olivia shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Daniel leaned back.
“Then why did you take the money?””
“Because I thought I was entitled to it.””
He stared at her.
“You thought you were entitled to money left by a man you never met?””
“He was my father too!””
The words burst from her.
Daniel went silent.
Olivia pressed her hands against her face.
“I spent my whole life believing he abandoned me. My mother struggled to pay rent. I watched her work two jobs and come home exhausted. I believed he had left us with nothing.””
Her voice broke.
“Then I discovered he had been wealthy. He had owned businesses, properties, investments. He had built a life for his son while my mother and I barely survived.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“So you stole from me.””
“I told myself I was taking what should have belonged to me.””
“You took from Ethan.””
Olivia began crying harder.
“I know.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I know.””
“You changed the insurance beneficiary.””
“I know!””
Her voice cracked.
“I know what I did, Daniel. I know it was wrong.””
He stared at her for a long moment.
Then he asked the question that had been haunting him since he entered the room.
“Did you know we might be related when you married me?””
Olivia looked at him.
“No. I didn't know.””
“Did you suspect it?””
She hesitated.
“Yes.””
Daniel rose.
Olivia reached across the table.
“Please don't go.””
He looked down at her hand.
“Why should I believe anything you say?””
“Because I'm telling you the truth now.””
“After you were caught.””
She withdrew her hand.
Daniel turned toward the door.
Then Olivia spoke again.
“There's something else.””
He stopped.
“My mother told me what happened the night your father died.””
Daniel turned slowly.
“What did she say?””
Olivia swallowed.
“She said she went to see him because he had promised to help her. She said he wanted to take the baby back.””
Daniel felt his pulse hammer.
“What baby?””
“The child she gave birth to. The boy she was told had died.””
He stared at her.
“Was that me?””
Olivia shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“Then who?””
“My mother said the child had been taken to another family. She didn't know where he went.””
Daniel gripped the back of his chair.
“Did she kill my father?””
Olivia began to cry.
“She said she found him on the floor. She said he was already dead.””
“Did she call the police?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Olivia looked at him.
“Because she had been there before he died. Because they argued. Because she had taken money from him. And because someone told her that if she spoke, the child would disappear forever.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Who told her that?””
Olivia shook her head.
“She never said.””
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
“Did she tell you where the child went?””
Olivia nodded slowly.
“She said Margaret Bennett took him.””
The room fell silent.
Daniel looked toward the door.
Margaret.
The woman who had raised him.
The woman who had defended him, protected him, and spent years trying to preserve the truth.
The woman who had just nearly died after confronting Olivia.
He felt suddenly dizzy.
“Why would Margaret take me?””
Olivia whispered, “Because she believed your father was dead and your mother couldn't protect you.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Which mother?””
Olivia had no answer.
Detective Harris entered the room a few minutes later.
“Mr. Bennett, we have new information.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
“The hospital has located the original records associated with your birth. The documents confirm that Margaret Bennett was listed as your legal guardian shortly after your birth.””
Daniel swallowed.
“And my biological mother?””
The detective looked at the file in his hand.
“Diane Carter.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
He had spent his entire life believing Margaret was his mother.
Now he had to accept that she had raised him under circumstances he couldn't yet understand.
“Is Diane alive?””
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
“She has agreed to come to the station.””
Daniel looked at Olivia.
“Does she know I'm here?””
The detective nodded.
“She asked to speak with you.””
Daniel stood.
“Then bring her in.””
A few minutes later, Diane Carter entered the room.
She was older than the photographs suggested, her dark hair streaked with gray. She wore a plain navy coat and carried a handbag with both hands.
When she saw Daniel, she stopped.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then Diane began to cry.
“Daniel.””
He stared at her.
“Are you my mother?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
He looked at Olivia.
Then back at Diane.
“Why did you give me away?””
Diane shook her head desperately.
“I didn't.””
“Then why did Margaret raise me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Diane sat down slowly.
“Your father was trying to protect you. He discovered that someone had been stealing from his accounts. He believed the person responsible would use you to control him.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Who?””
Diane looked at Olivia.
Olivia shook her head.
“Mom, don't.””
Diane closed her eyes.
“It was your father's business partner.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Who was he?””
Diane whispered, “Michael Harris.””
The retired prosecutor.
The man whose name appeared on the original statement.
The man connected to the missing investigation file.
Daniel felt his stomach turn.
“What did he do?””
Diane's hands trembled.
“He arranged for you to be placed with Margaret. He said it was temporary, that your father wanted to protect you until the legal dispute was resolved.””
“And then my father died.””
Diane nodded.
“He was found in his study. Michael told me the death was natural. He said the police had no reason to investigate.””
“Did you believe him?””
“I wanted to.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Did you kill my father?””
Diane's face crumpled.
“No.””
“Did you help someone kill him?””
She looked at the floor.
“I don't know.””
Daniel rose abruptly.
“You don't know?””
Diane began crying.
“I went to see him that night. We argued. He told me he was going to take you back. He said he had discovered the truth about Michael and was going to expose him.””
Daniel's voice shook.
“What happened next?””
Diane pressed a hand against her mouth.
“I left the study. Your father was alive when I left.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Then who killed him?””
Diane looked up.
Her eyes were full of terror.
“Michael.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Mrs. Carter, do you have evidence to support that claim?””
Diane reached into her handbag and removed a folded piece of paper.
“I kept this because I was afraid.””
She placed it on the table.
It was a handwritten statement signed by David Bennett three days before his death.
Michael Harris has been transferring funds without authorization. He has threatened to expose Diane Carter unless I agree to conceal the child's identity. If I refuse, he says the boy will never know who his father was.
Daniel stared at the signature.
His father had known.
He had known the money was being stolen.
He had known Diane was being threatened.
And he had tried to protect his son.
Diane wiped her face.
“After David died, Michael told me that if I went to the police, he would make sure I never saw you again. He said Margaret had agreed to raise you and that I should disappear.””
Daniel looked at the detective.
“Can this be verified?””
“We'll need to authenticate the document and compare it with the other evidence.””
Daniel turned back to Diane.
“Why didn't you come forward?””
She looked at him with desperate sorrow.
“Because I was afraid of losing you.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You already lost me.””
Diane bowed her head.
For several seconds, the room was silent.
Then Daniel asked the question that had been burning inside him since the moment he read his father's letter.
“Why did my father write that his daughter must never marry her own brother?””
Diane looked at Olivia.
Then she looked at Daniel.
And for the first time, she seemed to understand the full danger of the secret they had uncovered.
“Because,” she whispered, “he believed Olivia was his daughter too.””
Daniel turned toward his wife.
Olivia had gone completely still.
Diane continued, her voice breaking.
“But David was wrong about one thing.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What?””
Diane took a shaky breath.
“Olivia isn't your sister.””
The room fell silent.
Olivia covered her mouth.
Daniel gripped the edge of the table.
“Then who is she?””
Diane looked at her daughter with unbearable sadness.
“She is the child I had before you were born.””
Daniel felt the world tilt.
Diane continued.
“Olivia was never David's daughter. I lied to protect her from Michael. I told David she was his because I believed he would protect her. But he never knew the truth.””
Olivia stared at her mother.
“You told me he was my father.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe that for years.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
Olivia began to cry.
“From what?””
Diane looked at Detective Harris.
“From the man who arranged Daniel's false identity.””
The detective stepped forward.
“Mrs. Carter, who was Olivia's biological father?””
Diane closed her eyes.
Then she answered.
“Michael Harris.””
Daniel stared at her.
The retired prosecutor was not merely his father's business partner.
He was Olivia's biological father.
And the man who had threatened Ethan might have been trying to keep his own daughter from discovering the truth.
But before anyone could speak, Diane reached into her handbag again.
She removed a final document.
“This is why I came here,” she said.
Daniel took it.
It was a copy of a bank transfer dated three days before David Bennett died.
The money had been sent from David's private account to an offshore account controlled by Michael Harris.
Beneath the transfer was a handwritten note.
Payment received. The boy's identity remains concealed. The girl will be protected.
Daniel stared at the document.
Then he looked at Olivia.
“You knew about this?””
She shook her head, crying.
“No.””
Diane looked at her daughter.
“There's one more thing you need to know.””
Olivia raised her eyes.
“What?””
Diane's voice dropped to a whisper.
“Michael didn't threaten Ethan because Daniel was asking questions.””
She looked at Daniel.
“He threatened Ethan because he knows where the original recording is.””
Daniel felt his pulse hammering.
“What recording?””
Diane reached into her coat pocket and removed a small memory card.
“Your father recorded the night he died.””
She placed it on the table.
“The recording proves who was in the study when he stopped breathing.””
Daniel stared at the memory card.
For nearly ten years, he had believed his father died of a heart attack.
Now he was holding the evidence that might prove otherwise.
Detective Harris carefully took possession of the card.
“We'll have this examined immediately.””
Diane looked at Daniel.
“If the recording is genuine, you'll finally know the truth.””
Daniel swallowed.
“And if it proves Michael killed my father?””
Diane's eyes filled.
“Then you'll understand why Margaret spent her life trying to protect you.””
Daniel looked toward the door.
His mother was still unconscious in the hospital.
His son was still under guard.
His wife was sitting across from him, crying over a lie that had shaped her entire life.
And somewhere beyond the police station, a man who had concealed their identities for nearly thirty years knew that the evidence was finally within reach.
Daniel stood.
“I want to hear that recording.””
Detective Harris shook his head.
“Not until the forensic team verifies it.””
“Then how long?””
“Several hours, perhaps longer.””
Daniel looked at Diane.
She nodded slowly.
“There's something else on that card.””
“What?””
Diane wiped her tears.
“Your father recorded a second conversation.””
Daniel waited.
Diane looked directly at him.
“The conversation he had with Margaret the night before he died.””
Daniel felt his heart stop.
“What did they say?””
Diane whispered, “They were arguing about which child Margaret was supposed to protect.””
The detective looked up sharply.
“Which child?””
Diane's lips trembled.
“I don't know.””
Then she turned toward Olivia.
“But Margaret does.””
A sudden knock sounded at the interview-room door.
An officer entered, visibly shaken.
“Detective Harris, we have a problem.””
Harris stood.
“What is it?””
“The hospital just called.””
Daniel's stomach dropped.
“What's happened?””
The officer looked at him.
“Your mother has regained consciousness.””
Daniel took a step forward.
“That's good news.””
The officer hesitated.
“She asked to speak to you immediately.””
“Then I'm going.””
The officer swallowed.
“She also asked us to make sure Olivia is not allowed near her.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Why?””
The officer looked down at his notes.
“Because, according to the nurse, Mrs. Bennett's first words were…”
He paused.
May you like
Then he read them aloud.
“*Tell Daniel the truth. Olivia wasn't the only child David Bennett hid from this family.*”
