Chapter 8: The Woman Who Held the Key

“Mia,” I said, “repeat that.””

She was crying so hard I could barely understand her.

“Your son didn't act alone.””

I closed my eyes.

“Who helped him?””

“I can't say it over the phone.””

“Then tell me where you are.””

“I told you, I can't.””

“Mia, I'm trying to help you.””

“No.”” Her voice sharpened.

“You're trying to understand what happened to Margaret. Those are not the same thing.””

I looked at the memory card in my hand.

“Then help me understand.””

She was silent for several seconds.

Finally, she said, “Meet me at the old church on Beacon Street. Half an hour. Come alone.””

“Mia—”

“If you bring Daniel, I will disappear. If you bring Claire, I'll disappear. And if you bring the police before you've heard everything, the truth will disappear with me.””

The call ended.

I stood in Margaret's nursery, staring at the phone.

Half an hour.

I had no idea whether Mia was telling the truth or setting another trap.

But I knew one thing.

She was terrified.

And whatever she had been trying to accomplish in my hallway the previous evening, it had not been enough to protect herself.

I called Claire.

She answered immediately.

“Dad? Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Did you find the notebook?””

“Yes.””

“Did you find the recording?””

I hesitated.

“How do you know about the recording?””

“Because Mom told me there was a camera in her room. She said it recorded the last conversation she had with Daniel.””

My stomach tightened.

“Did you know the camera existed five years ago?””

“No. I found out later.””

“From whom?””

“Mia.””

I closed my eyes.

“Claire, I need you to listen carefully. I'm going to meet Mia.””

“No.””

“Claire—”

“Dad, don't go alone. Please.””

“She asked me to.””

“That's exactly why you shouldn't.””

I heard movement on her end of the line.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Daniel called me ten minutes ago. He told me to tell you that if you go looking for Mia, you won't like what you find.””

“Did he say where she was?””

“No. But he sounded frightened.””

That stopped me.

“Daniel doesn't get frightened.””

“Yes, he does,” Claire said.

“He just makes everyone else pay for it.””

I looked toward the bedroom door.

“Stay with Rachel and Lily. Don't answer the door for anyone you don't recognize.””

“Dad, please—”

“I'll call you when I know more.””

I ended the call before she could argue.

The old church stood on a quiet street between a public library and a row of brick townhouses. Margaret and I had attended services there for more than twenty years, until her illness made it difficult for her to leave the house.

I arrived at 12:31 p.m.

Mia was sitting on a bench beneath a leafless tree.

She wore a gray coat and a dark scarf. Her hair was tied back, and she had no makeup on. Without her usual polished appearance, she looked younger.

And exhausted.

When she saw me, she stood.

“You came alone?””

“Yes.””

She searched the street behind me.

“Did you bring the notebook?””

“No.””

“Good.””

I stopped several feet away.

“Why did you accuse me of attacking you?””

She looked down.

For a moment, I thought she might refuse to answer.

Then she said, “Because I needed Daniel to believe I was still on his side.””

I stared at her.

“You tore your own blouse. You screamed. You let him hit me.””

“I know.””

“You watched him strike his father.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“And you did nothing.””

She covered her face.

“I was trying to make him angry enough to reveal what he was hiding.””

I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.

“You wanted him angry?””

“I wanted him to think he had won. I wanted him to stop being careful.””

“So you used me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was so unexpected that I had no immediate response.

Mia lowered her hands.

“I knew Daniel would react violently if he thought you had attacked me. I also knew the hallway camera would record everything. I thought if I made him lose control, he would expose himself.””

“You thought he'd slap me?””

“No.””

“Then what did you expect?””

She looked at me helplessly.

“I thought he would shout. I thought he would threaten you. I didn't think he'd hit you.””

I stared at her.

“Your judgment is as poor as your conscience.””

She flinched.

“I deserve that.””

“You deserve a great deal more than that.””

“I know.””

I turned away.

She caught my sleeve.

“Thomas, please. You need to hear the rest.””

I looked at her hand until she released it.

“Start with Margaret.””

Mia sat down again.

I remained standing.

“Five years ago,” she began, “Daniel discovered that Margaret had copied the company records. He knew she was planning to give them to a lawyer. He also knew she had been speaking to Rachel.””

“Did you know Rachel was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know where she was?””

“No. Margaret had helped her disappear, but she never told me where they had gone.””

“Why did you help Daniel?””

Mia stared at the ground.

“Because I was afraid of losing everything.””

“Your house?””

“My children. My marriage. My reputation.””

I shook my head.

“You helped a man steal his own daughter, and you called that protecting your children?””

“I didn't know what he was going to do when he took Lily.””

“You knew he was taking her.””

“Yes.””

She began to cry.

“I knew he wanted to separate Rachel from Lily. I thought he would use lawyers, that he would force Rachel to agree to a custody arrangement. I never imagined he would make her disappear.””

“Yet you married him.””

“Yes.””

“You raised Emily under a false identity.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told her the truth.””

Mia pressed her hands against her knees.

“I convinced myself that keeping her safe was more important than telling her where she came from.””

“Safe from whom?””

She looked up.

“Her father.””

I stared at her.

For the first time, Mia's face showed something other than fear.

It showed shame.

“I used to think I could change him,” she whispered.

“I thought if I loved him enough, if I gave him a family, if I stood beside him when things went wrong, he would eventually stop hurting people.””

“And did he?””

“No.””

She laughed bitterly.

“He only became better at hiding it.””

I sat down at the far end of the bench.

“Tell me about the night Margaret died.””

Mia took a long breath.

“Daniel arrived at the house around eight in the evening. Margaret had called him earlier and told him she was going to expose the company records. He was furious.””

“I was there.””

“I know. You were downstairs preparing coffee.””

I looked at her.

“How do you know that?””

“Because I was in the bedroom with Margaret when Daniel arrived.””

My chest tightened.

“You were there?””

She nodded.

“I had gone to apologize. Margaret had asked me to tell the truth about Lily, and I finally understood that I couldn't keep pretending nothing had happened.””

“Did you bring the medication?””

“No.””

“Did Daniel?””

“Yes.””

She wiped her eyes.

“He said the doctor had changed the prescription. He showed Margaret the bottle. She refused to take it.””

“What happened next?””

“He shouted at her. He told her she was going to destroy him. He said that if the records reached the police, he would lose everything.””

I thought about the recording.

You should have stayed out of it.

“What did Margaret say?””

“She told him that if he had done nothing wrong, he had nothing to fear.””

I closed my eyes.

That sounded exactly like my wife.

Mia continued.

“Daniel left the room for a few minutes. He said he was going to get you. While he was gone, Margaret asked me to help her reach the phone.””

“Why didn't she call me?””

“She tried. The phone was on the bedside table, but she was too weak to get out of bed.””

Mia began to tremble.

“I helped her sit up. She asked me to take the medication bottle and put it somewhere Daniel couldn't find it. She said she wanted to show it to her doctor.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Mia looked toward the church.

“I still have it.””

I felt my pulse quicken.

“Then why didn't you give it to the police?””

“Because Daniel told me he had a video of me entering Margaret's room. He said he would tell everyone I had given her the medication and that I had caused her death.””

“Did you give her anything?””

“No.””

“Then why believe him?””

“Because he had already convinced people I was unstable. He had recordings of me arguing with him. He had messages where I threatened to leave. He knew how to take something real and make it look like something else.””

I thought of the torn blouse.

The staged attack.

Mia had been using the same methods Daniel had taught her.

“Who actually gave Margaret the medication?”” I asked.

Mia looked at me.

“Your son.””

“Are you certain?””

“I watched him.””

She leaned closer.

“He returned to the bedroom carrying a glass of water. He told Margaret he wanted to make peace. He held out the bottle and said he had brought the correct medicine.””

“And she took it?””

“No. She refused. They argued again.””

Mia's voice dropped.

“Then Daniel grabbed her wrist. She tried to pull away. The bottle fell, and several pills scattered across the floor.””

I could barely breathe.

“What did he do?””

“He picked them up. He told her she was making a mess. Then he said something I will never forget.””

She looked directly into my eyes.

“He told her that nobody would believe a dying woman over a successful man.””

My hands clenched.

“And then?””

Mia swallowed.

“He left the bottle on the bedside table and went downstairs. I stayed with Margaret for a few minutes. She told me to go before he returned. She said I needed to protect Lily.””

“Did she say anything else?””

Mia nodded.

“She told me that if I ever had a chance to tell you the truth, I should do it.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did you wait five years?””

She began to cry again.

“Because I am a coward.””

The answer was so simple that it silenced me.

Mia stared at her hands.

“I told myself I was protecting Emily. I told myself that if I stayed married to Daniel, I could keep him from hurting her. I told myself that if I remained quiet, the past would stay buried.””

She looked up.

“But yesterday, when you went upstairs, I saw you standing beside that camera. I knew the recording would show everything. I knew Daniel would realize you had evidence. And I panicked.””

“So you accused me.””

“Yes.””

“And now?””

“Now Daniel knows the truth is coming out. He has taken Emily from the house. I don't know where he has gone.””

I stood abruptly.

“What?””

“He called me an hour ago. He said he was taking Emily somewhere safe. When I asked where, he told me I had no right to ask questions.””

I felt a cold wave of fear.

“Did he say anything else?””

Mia nodded.

“He said that if I ever spoke to you again, he would make sure I never saw Emily again.””

I reached for my phone.

“We're calling the police.””

“Not yet.””

I stared at her.

“Are you serious?””

She opened her handbag and removed a small plastic container.

Inside lay several pills.

“The medication.””

I looked at them.

“Where did you get these?””

“From the bottle I took from Margaret's room.””

“Why have you kept them?””

“Because I knew one day I would have to prove what happened.””

I examined the container.

There was no label.

Mia reached into her bag again and removed a folded document.

It was a laboratory report dated four years earlier.

“After Margaret died, I had one of the pills tested privately,” she said.

“The report found a substance that was not listed on her prescription.””

My heart hammered.

“What substance?””

“A sedative. In a much higher concentration than the medication she was supposed to receive.””

I stared at the paper.

“Did the laboratory say it could have killed her?””

“No. They said they couldn't determine that from the pill alone. Margaret was already seriously ill, and the report wasn't enough to prove what happened.””

I felt a strange mixture of relief and horror.

The evidence was real.

But the truth was still incomplete.

Mia took a shaky breath.

“I didn't give her those pills, Thomas. I swear it.””

I studied her face.

For the first time, I believed that she was telling the truth about the medication.

But believing her did not erase what she had done to Rachel.

Or what she had allowed Daniel to do to me.

“I can't forgive you,” I said.

She nodded.

“I don't expect you to.””

“And I won't protect you from the consequences.””

“I understand.””

“But I will help you find Emily.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Thank you.””

I stood and offered her my hand.

She stared at it for a moment before taking it.

Then she whispered, “There's something else you need to know.””

I waited.

Mia's expression changed.

“The camera you found in Margaret's bedroom wasn't the only one.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

“Daniel installed a second camera in the hallway outside the bedroom. It recorded everything that happened after you went downstairs.””

“Where is it?””

“He took it five years ago. But I saw him make a copy of the footage.””

“Where?””

She looked toward the street.

“His office.””

I pulled out my phone and called Claire.

She answered immediately.

“Dad?””

“Where are Rachel and Lily?””

“Safe. Why?””

“Daniel has Emily.””

Claire gasped.

“What?””

“Get Rachel to a police station. Tell her to bring every document she has. I'm going to Daniel's office.””

“Dad, no!””

“Claire, listen to me. Call the police. Tell them Emily may be in danger.””

I ended the call.

Mia stood beside me, clutching the medication container.

“Thomas, there's one more thing.””

I turned.

“Margaret didn't just leave evidence against Daniel.””

“What else did she leave?””

Mia swallowed.

“She left a letter for Emily.””

“Where?””

“In Daniel's office.””

“Why would he keep it?””

“Because he couldn't bring himself to destroy it.””

I stared at her.

For years, my son had kept the truth about his daughter hidden.

But he had also kept a letter written by the woman who had tried to expose him.

I began walking toward my car.

Mia followed.

“Thomas?””

I stopped.

“If we find that letter, you'll understand why Daniel was so afraid of Margaret.””

I looked at her.

“I already understand why he was afraid.””

She shook her head.

“No. You understand what he did.””

May you like

Her voice broke.

“You still don't know what he believed he was protecting.””
