Chapter 6: The Man Who Claimed My Home

I didn't open the door.

Not immediately.

I stood in the hallway, staring at the brass handle, while Daniel whispered behind me that we should let Marcus explain himself. Claire insisted that nobody should discuss anything without legal advice. Mia sat on the bottom stair, her phone clutched against her chest.

The doorbell rang a third time.

“Mr. Harrison,” the man called, “I understand this is unexpected. But I have documents that require your attention.””

I looked at Claire.

She shook her head.

“Don't let him inside until we know what he's here for.””

I turned back toward the door.

“Leave the documents in the mailbox. I'll have my attorney contact you.””

A short silence followed.

Then Marcus Bell laughed softly.

“I'm afraid it doesn't work that way.””

“Then explain how it works.””

“I represent the investment group that funded your son's business. We have a contractual interest in the property.””

“You have no interest in my property.””

“That's a matter we'll need to clarify.””

“There's nothing to clarify. I never agreed to sell my house.””

Another pause.

Then he said, “Perhaps you should speak to your son.””

I turned.

Daniel had gone pale.

Marcus continued through the door.

“Mr. Harrison, your son assured us that the family had reached an understanding. We relied on that representation when we released the funds.””

I felt my hands curl.

“Then you should have verified it with me.””

“We did receive documentation bearing your signature.””

“It was forged.””

The silence on the other side of the door lasted longer this time.

When Marcus spoke again, his voice had lost its polite warmth.

“That's a serious allegation.””

“So is claiming ownership of a house that belongs to someone else.””

Claire stepped beside me.

“Mr. Bell, this conversation is over. Any further communication should go through our attorney.””

Marcus didn't answer her.

Instead, he addressed me again.

“Mr. Harrison, I strongly recommend that you reconsider your position. The outstanding balance is substantial, and there may be consequences for everyone involved if this matter becomes contentious.””

I heard the threat beneath his careful words.

He wasn't simply asking for a conversation.

He was warning me that refusing to cooperate could make my life difficult.

“Are you threatening me?”” I asked.

“I'm explaining the situation.””

“Then explain it to the police.””

Claire touched my arm.

“Dad, don't engage with him.””

I took a breath.

“Mr. Bell, you have no permission to enter this property. Leave now.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then I heard footsteps retreating down the porch.

A car door opened.

Closed.

An engine started.

Claire waited until the sound faded before she unlocked the deadbolt.

“Don't go outside,” she told Daniel.

He looked offended.

“Why would I?””

“Because you seem determined to make every bad decision available to you.””

Mia let out a quiet, involuntary laugh.

Daniel glared at her.

She immediately looked down.

I closed the curtains.

The house seemed smaller now, its familiar walls suddenly inadequate against the people who had decided my life was theirs to rearrange.

“Claire,” I said, “what happens if Marcus really has a transfer document?””

She opened the blue folder again.

“Then we find out exactly what it is. A forged deed, an unauthorized lien, a fraudulent agreement—those are different legal problems. We shouldn't assume what he can or cannot enforce until an attorney reviews everything.””

I nodded.

That was the first sensible thing anyone had said all evening.

“Can we call someone now?””

“An attorney's emergency line, perhaps. But we need to preserve the original documents and all the recordings first.””

I looked toward the security monitor.

“Everything is saved to the recorder.””

“Is there a backup?””

“Yes. The technician configured a separate drive.””

“Where is it?””

“In my office desk.””

Claire went upstairs to retrieve it.

Daniel remained by the fireplace, staring at his phone.

His silence had become unbearable.

“Who is the other lender?”” I asked him.

He didn't respond.

“Daniel.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“The three hundred and sixty thousand dollars. Who provided it?””

“A private investment company.””

“Name?””

“Northbridge Capital.””

“Is Marcus Bell involved with them?””

He hesitated.

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“So he's representing both sides of the arrangement?””

“It's more complicated than that.””

“Then explain it.””

Daniel paced toward the dining room.

“Northbridge funded the business. Marcus arranged the property security through another company. They weren't supposed to be the same transaction.””

“But they used the same house.””

He stopped.

“Yes.””

“And the money?””

He rubbed his jaw.

“Some of it paid business expenses. Some went toward earlier debts. Some covered the mortgage on our home.””

“You told me your mortgage was current.””

“It was.””

“Then why use the money?””

He looked at me with exhausted eyes.

“Because we were drowning, Dad.””

The words should have moved me.

Once, they would have.

I would have reached for my checkbook before he finished the sentence. I would have asked how much he needed, how quickly he needed it, and whether I should sell some investments to help.

But I had already given him money he had never repaid.

And now he had tried to take the roof over my head.

“Did you spend any of the money on yourself?””

He looked away.

“That isn't relevant.””

“It is if you want me to understand.””

He sighed.

“We paid for a family vacation. We replaced the car. There were school expenses. The kids needed things.””

“Did you tell Mia where the money came from?””

“She knew about the loan.””

“Did she know you had promised my house?””

Daniel's silence answered.

Mia rose from the stairs.

“He told me it was temporary,” she said.

“He said the lender needed proof that the family had assets. He told me you had agreed to help.””

“And you believed him?””

“At first.””

“Then you saw the document.””

She nodded.

“What did you do?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I signed the witness line.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel said if I refused, we'd lose everything. Our house. The children's school.

Our savings. He said the lender would take it all.””

“So you helped him use my home to protect yours.””

She covered her mouth.

“I know how that sounds.””

“It sounds like what happened.””

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Don't let him make you feel guilty. We were both trying to keep our family together.””

Mia turned on him.

“You told me the money was secured by your father's consent!””

“I thought he would agree!””

“But he didn't!””

“I thought I could persuade him!””

“By accusing him of attacking me?””

Daniel recoiled.

Mia's voice broke.

“You told me to make it look like he'd lost control. You said if the police came, we could show them how unstable he was. You said the camera wouldn't matter because people would believe a frightened woman over an old man.””

I stared at my son.

He shook his head.

“She was upset. She didn't understand what she was saying.””

Mia laughed through her tears.

“I understood perfectly.””

She turned toward me.

“I did tear my blouse. I did slap myself. I did fall on the floor. Thomas never touched me.””

Hearing her admit it should have brought relief.

Instead, I felt a deep, cold sorrow.

I had known she was lying.

But hearing her say it aloud made the betrayal real in a way the recording hadn't.

“Why?”” I asked.

She looked at Daniel.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of him?””

“Of losing everything.””

“Then why didn't you tell me the truth?””

She lowered her head.

“Because I thought if I helped him this one time, we could fix everything afterward.””

I studied her face.

“You thought you could destroy my reputation, take my house, and then repair our relationship once the money was safe?””

She began sobbing.

“I know. I know how terrible it sounds.””

“No, Mia. I don't think you do.””

Claire returned with the backup drive and stopped in the doorway.

“What happened?””

Mia wiped her cheeks.

“I told him.””

Claire looked at me.

I nodded.

“Everything?””

“Everything.””

Claire set the drive on the table.

“Then we preserve it all. The recording, the messages, the property agreement. And we're going to make copies before anyone has another opportunity to interfere.””

Daniel's phone rang.

He looked at the screen and immediately silenced it.

It rang again.

This time, Claire noticed the name.

“Marcus Bell,” she said.

“Answer it.””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because he'll want to know what happened.””

“Then tell him.””

Daniel stared at the phone.

It rang a third time.

Finally, he answered.

“What?””

Marcus's voice was loud enough for all of us to hear.

“Did you speak to your father?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“He isn't agreeing to anything.””

A pause.

Then Marcus said, “That wasn't the arrangement.””

Daniel turned away.

“I know.””

“You told me the documents were in order.””

“They are.””

“Then why is your father refusing to cooperate?””

Daniel's gaze moved toward the security monitor.

“Because he found out.””

“Found out what?””

“That the signature isn't his.””

The room fell silent.

Marcus didn't speak for several seconds.

Then he said, “You told me the signature had been verified.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I said it looked right.””

“You said it had been verified.””

“I was wrong.””

Marcus's voice became colder.

“Where is the original?””

“I don't know.””

“Don't lie to me.””

“I'm not lying!””

“Listen carefully, Daniel. If the original document cannot be produced, I will have no choice but to protect my client's interests. That means recovering the funds from whoever is legally responsible.””

Daniel's face drained of color.

“Marcus, please. We can work this out.””

“You have until nine tomorrow morning to provide the original paperwork or a satisfactory explanation. After that, I will proceed with the remedies available to us.””

The call ended.

Daniel lowered the phone.

For a moment, he looked as though he might collapse.

Then he turned toward me.

“Dad, I need your help.””

I stared at him.

“You need my help?””

“I can fix this if you'll just sign a confirmation that you agreed to the original arrangement. We can amend the documents, get more time, and repay the loan.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Absolutely not.””

Daniel ignored her.

“Dad, please. I'm asking you as your son.””

I looked at him for a long time.

“Would you ask me to do this if you hadn't been caught?””

He didn't answer.

“Would you have told me about the debt? The forged signature? The plan to make me look dangerous?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He looked down.

I felt the last of my hope drain away.

“I'm not signing anything,” I said.

“And I'm not lying to protect you.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“Then the kids could lose their home.””

I stood.

“Don't use your children to make me feel responsible for your decisions.””

He flinched.

For the first time that night, he seemed to understand that the old methods no longer worked.

He couldn't frighten me into giving up my home.

He couldn't shame me into surrendering my name.

And he couldn't use my love for his children to make me accept a lie.

Claire took my hand.

“Dad, let's get you upstairs. You need some rest.””

I nodded, but before I could move, Mia spoke.

“Thomas, there's something else you should know about Marcus.””

I turned.

She was staring at the phone in Daniel's hand.

“He didn't come here just to collect the money.””

“What do you mean?””

She swallowed.

“He told Daniel that if you refused to sign, the next step would be to challenge your ability to manage your own affairs. He already has a doctor willing to review your medical history.””

My stomach tightened.

“A doctor?””

She nodded.

“Someone who examined you before.””

I tried to remember every physician I had seen in the last few years.

My family doctor.

The cardiologist who checked my blood pressure.

The specialist who reviewed my memory after I misplaced my keys.

None of them had ever suggested I couldn't manage my affairs.

“Who is this doctor?”” I asked.

Mia looked at Daniel.

He shook his head, but she continued.

“Dr. Samuel Reed.””

The name struck me like a physical blow.

Dr. Reed had been Margaret's physician during the final months of her life.

He had sat beside me in the hospital corridor when the oncologist explained that there was nothing more they could do. He had held my shoulder while I cried. After Margaret died, he had sent me a handwritten note expressing his condolences.

I had trusted him.

I had believed he was one of the few people who understood what our family had endured.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why would Dr. Reed agree to this?””

Daniel's face had gone completely still.

“Dad, I don't know.””

But his expression told me he knew more than he was saying.

Claire stepped closer.

“Daniel, did you contact Dr. Reed?””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

“About Dad's health?””

“Yes.””

“What did you tell him?””

Daniel looked at me.

For a moment, I thought he might finally confess everything.

Instead, he whispered, “I told him Dad had been forgetting things.””

“That's true,” I said.

“I have forgotten things. So have you.””

“I know.””

“Then what else did you tell him?””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I told him you were becoming confused and paranoid.””

The words landed with devastating precision.

He had taken my ordinary mistakes and turned them into evidence against me.

He had taken my grief and called it instability.

He had taken my trust and made it look like weakness.

I sat down heavily.

Claire knelt beside me.

“Dad, look at me. You're not alone in this.””

I nodded, though I could barely hear her.

Across the room, Daniel stood motionless, his phone hanging at his side.

Then it vibrated again.

A new message appeared on the screen.

He read it.

And whatever color remained in his face disappeared.

“What is it?”” Mia asked.

Daniel didn't answer.

He slowly turned the phone toward us.

The message was from Marcus Bell.

*The doctor has changed his position. We need to move tonight.*

I stared at the screen.

“Move what?””

May you like

Daniel looked at me, his eyes wide with terror.

Then he whispered, “Dad, I think they're planning to have you taken away before morning.””
