Chapter 8: The Father’s Final Choice
The document shook slightly in my hand.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I was angry.
A lifetime of questions.
A lifetime of missing pieces.
And every answer somehow led back to one person.
My father.
Richard Carter.
I looked at Ethan.
“Is this true?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That silence hurt.
“Ethan.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The word felt heavier than any accusation.
I looked at Hayes.
“You said he traded Ethan’s freedom for my life.””
Hayes nodded.
“Your father was given a choice.””
“What choice?””
“Give us Ethan.””
My jaw tightened.
“Or?””
“Or they would come after you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So he chose me.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Why does that sound like you’re angry?””
His face changed.
“Because he didn’t ask me.””
The answer stopped me.
“He decided my life was worth sacrificing.””
I understood then.
This wasn’t just about betrayal.
It was about control.
My father had spent his life making choices for everyone.
Even when he believed he was protecting them.
Even when he believed he was saving them.
He never trusted them enough to choose for themselves.
Hayes stepped closer.
“You should understand something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Your father wasn’t the only person who made sacrifices.””
I stared.
“You mean yourself?””
A small smile appeared.
“No.””
He looked at Ethan.
“I lost everything trying to keep this secret buried.””
Ethan laughed.
“You lost nothing.””
His voice became colder.
“You gained power.””
The room fell silent.
Because suddenly I saw the truth.
Hayes wasn’t just someone hiding the past.
He was someone protecting his future.
I turned toward him.
“You wanted the evidence.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because if the files become public, everything collapses.””
“Everything?””
“The entire command structure.””
I nodded slowly.
“So this was never about my father.””
Hayes looked at me.
“It was always bigger than him.””
My phone buzzed.
Everyone froze.
I checked the screen.
Another classified alert.
But this one wasn’t from Hayes.
It was from my own command.
*GENERAL CARTER, IMMEDIATE RECALL.*
Below it:
*YOU HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED. RETURN FOR DEBRIEFING.*
I showed it to Ethan.
His face changed.
“Don’t go.””
I looked at him.
“They know.””
“Exactly.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means they’re not bringing you back to question you.””
I felt a cold sensation.
“Then why?””
Ethan stared toward the exit.
“To make sure you never leave.””
A silence followed.
Then the warehouse lights suddenly flickered.
The armed team outside moved.
Hayes looked satisfied.
“They’re here.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
The answer came from the radio of one of the soldiers.
“Target confirmed.””
A voice followed.
A voice I recognized.
My commanding officer.
The man whose recording had destroyed my faith.
“Bring General Carter in.””
I felt something inside me break.
Because this was no longer an investigation.
No longer a family secret.
No longer a military scandal.
This was a battle.
And everyone I had trusted had chosen a side.
I looked at Ethan.
“What do we do?””
For the first time, my brother smiled.
A real smile.
Not happiness.
Determination.
“Now you finally get to make your own choice.””
The warehouse doors began opening.
Soldiers entered.
Weapons raised.
And behind them stood the person I never expected to see.
My father.
Richard Carter.
Alive.
Standing beside the enemy.
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
Then he said:
“I’m sorry.””
I stared at him.
“Why are you here?””
His answer destroyed the last piece of certainty I had left.
“Because I came to finish what I started.””
He looked at Ethan.
Then at me.
“And because I’m the only person who knows how to stop them.””
The soldiers moved closer.
My father raised his hands.
Not surrendering.
Preparing.
Then he whispered:
“Your grandfather’s secret was never the mission.””
A pause.
“It was what happened after.””
The lights went out.
And in the darkness, I heard my father say:
“They’re coming for the person who has the real file.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
May you like
His answer was barely audible.
“Your mother.””
