Chapter 8: The Truth About Michael

I didn’t sleep.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was terrified.

There are moments when your entire life feels like a house built on sand.

You can see the cracks.

You can feel everything moving.

But you still don’t want it to collapse.

The next morning, Michael found me sitting at the kitchen table.

“Dad?””

I looked up.

He knew immediately.

Something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I looked at the letter.

Then at him.

“Michael.””

His face changed.

“What?””

I hated myself for asking.

But I needed the truth.

“Did your mother ever tell you anything about your biological father?””

The color left his face.

“No.””

I swallowed.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

He looked scared.

“Why?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know how to tell my son that the world had suddenly become uncertain.

I called Rachel.

She came over within an hour.

When she saw the letter, she immediately looked away.

“You knew.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Rachel sighed.

“Yes.””

Michael stood.

“Knew what?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Your mother wanted to tell your father.””

My heart dropped.

“Tell me what?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“She wanted you to know the truth about how you became a family.””

I looked at Michael.

He looked terrified.

Rachel continued.

“Marcus, you are his father.””

I exhaled.

But then she added:

“Just not biologically.””

Silence.

Michael looked at me.

Then at Rachel.

“What?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because the only thing I cared about was him.

Not DNA.

Not biology.

Him.

“Michael.””

His eyes were wet.

“Is it true?””

I stood.

“Listen to me.””

He stepped back.

“Is it true?””

I forced my voice to stay steady.

“I don’t care.””

He froze.

“What?””

“You are my son.””

“But—”

“No.””

I walked toward him.

“You are my son.””

His face broke.

“I thought you would leave.””

The sentence destroyed me.

“Why would I leave?””

“Because everyone leaves.””

I hugged him.

And for the first time in years, my son cried against my shoulder.

Later, Rachel explained everything.

Emily had gotten pregnant before we met.

The biological father disappeared before Michael was born.

Emily never told me because she was afraid I would feel trapped.

But I had chosen Michael.

From the moment I held him.

From the moment I watched him take his first steps.

From the moment he called me Dad.

The truth had never changed anything.

Except one thing.

It explained Sarah.

Because Sarah had known.

She had known Michael wasn’t biologically mine.

And she used that secret as power.

That afternoon, I found another message from Sarah.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

“I never told Michael because Emily made me promise.””

I typed back.

“You used a promise to hurt my son.””

Her reply came quickly.

“I was afraid you would leave me.””

I looked at the screen.

And finally understood.

Sarah’s entire life had been built around fear.

Fear of losing.

Fear of being second.

Fear of never being chosen.

But she let that fear destroy everyone around her.

Then one final message arrived.

From Linda.

“Marcus, you need to know something else.””

I called her.

“What now?””

Her voice was quiet.

“Sarah wasn’t the one who sent you the photograph.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She didn’t send any of the messages.””

My heart started racing.

“Then who did?””

Linda hesitated.

“Someone who wants Sarah exposed.””

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Jordan.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Because suddenly, the quiet boy in the red beanie from the dinner table wasn’t just Sarah’s son.

He was someone who had been watching everything.

And he had his own reason for wanting the truth to come out.
