The Brother Behind the Wall / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Child Who Held the Secret

I drove home before sunrise.

Nobody could stop me.

Not my mother.

Not Michael.

Not Vanessa.

Because one thought kept repeating in my head.

Lily.

My daughter.

The little girl who fed my brother.

The little girl who carried secrets she was too young to understand.

The little girl who had unknowingly become the person everyone was fighting over.

When we reached the house, the police were already there.

I stopped the car.

“What happened?””

An officer approached.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes.””

“Your house was broken into.””

My heart dropped.

“Is my daughter okay?””

He hesitated.

That half-second destroyed me.

“Your daughter is safe.””

I ran inside.

“Lily!””

She appeared from the hallway.

“Daddy!””

I grabbed her so tightly she complained.

“Too tight.””

I didn’t care.

I held her.

Because she was here.

She was alive.

Behind me, Vanessa collapsed into tears.

My mother stood silently.

Watching her granddaughter.

Watching the child who had saved all of us.

After everyone calmed down, I asked:

“What happened?””

The officer showed me the damage.

Nothing valuable was taken.

No electronics.

No money.

Only one thing was missing.

“The notebook?””

I looked at Michael.

He shook his head.

“No.””

The officer handed me an evidence bag.

Inside was a small wooden box.

I recognized it immediately.

Lily’s treasure box.

The one she kept drawings and little memories in.

I looked at her.

“Sweetheart, did someone take something from this?””

She nodded.

“My picture.””

“What picture?””

She looked confused.

“The one Uncle Michael gave me.””

Michael stepped forward.

“I never gave her a picture.””

Lily frowned.

“Yes, you did.””

She ran upstairs.

A minute later, she returned holding another drawing.

It was folded carefully.

“I hid the real one.””

I unfolded it.

And my heart stopped.

It was a photograph.

Old.

Damaged.

But clear enough.

A picture of Daniel Carter.

Our real father.

Standing beside Jonathan.

And between them…

A young woman.

My mother.

On the back was handwriting.

Not my mother’s.

Not my father’s.

A child’s handwriting.

Michael looked at it.

Then his face changed.

“Where did you get this?””

Lily shrugged.

“Uncle Michael told me to keep it safe.””

Michael shook his head.

“I never said that.””

A terrible silence followed.

Because everyone understood.

Someone else had been speaking to Lily.

Someone else had been using the wall.

I knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart, when did you get this?””

She looked nervous.

“Promise you won’t be mad?””

“I promise.””

She whispered:

“The first time I heard Uncle Michael, there was another man with him.””

Michael froze.

“What man?””

Lily looked at him.

“The man who told me to keep secrets.””

My voice became cold.

“Who?””

She looked at the photograph.

Then pointed.

“At him.””

I followed her finger.

She was pointing at Jonathan.

My fake father.

But that was impossible.

Because the picture was from decades ago.

And then Lily said something that made everyone silent.

“Grandpa said he would come back for it.””

My mother grabbed the table.

“What did you say?””

Lily looked confused.

“He came to my room.””

“When?””

“Last week.””

Nobody breathed.

My father had been in our house.

Alive.

Watching.

Waiting.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked just as shocked.

“I didn’t know.””

For once, I believed her.

Michael grabbed the photograph.

“Mark.””

“What?””

He turned it over.

There was writing on the back.

A message.

But not from Jonathan.

From someone else.

Someone who knew we would find it.

*“The man you call your father stole my name.””*

Michael looked at me.

Then continued reading.

*“The woman you call your wife stole your trust.””*

Vanessa covered her mouth.

My hands tightened.

There was one final line.

The line that made my blood run cold.

*“And the child you think you are protecting is the only person who knows where I hid the truth.””*

I looked at Lily.

She was crying.

“Daddy…”

I immediately held her.

“It’s okay.””

But I knew it wasn’t.

Because somewhere out there was a man who had spent decades controlling my family.

And now he wasn’t after money.

He wasn’t after power.

He was after my daughter.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a familiar voice whispered:

“Mark.””

I froze.

Because it wasn’t Jonathan.

It wasn’t my mother.

It wasn’t Michael.

It was someone younger.

Someone I had never expected.

A girl’s voice.

A girl who sounded exactly like Lily.

“Daddy…”

My blood turned cold.

May you like

Because the voice continued:

“I know where Grandpa hid the truth.””
