Chapter 4: The Last Claim
Robert Whitmore walked into my father’s mansion like he owned every inch of it.
He didn’t ask permission.
He didn’t greet me.
He simply looked around and smiled.
“Richard always had expensive taste.””
I stood beside Noah.
“Get out.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“Olivia.””
“No.””
I kept my eyes on Robert.
“Anyone who enters this house after what happened yesterday doesn’t get a welcome.””
Robert laughed.
“You have your father’s attitude.””
“And you have the same arrogance he warned me about.””
The smile disappeared.
Thomas stepped forward.
“Robert, this is not the time.””
Robert ignored him.
“I disagree.””
He placed a folder on the table.
“This is exactly the time.””
I stared at it.
“What is that?””
“A challenge.””
Daniel looked nervous.
“What are you doing?””
Robert looked at him.
“Fixing the mistake your grandfather made.””
My stomach turned.
There it was.
The truth.
They didn’t see Noah as family.
They saw him as an obstacle.
Robert opened the folder.
“Your father’s will can be contested.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No, it cannot.””
Robert smiled.
“You’re always so confident.””
“Because the documents are clear.””
Robert leaned closer.
“Documents can be changed.””
The room went silent.
I felt Noah move behind me.
“Mommy?””
I turned.
“It’s okay.””
But it wasn’t.
Not anymore.
Robert looked at my son.
“So this is the heir.””
His tone made my skin crawl.
Noah held my hand.
Robert continued.
“A child doesn’t understand responsibility.””
I stepped between them.
“He understands more than most adults.””
Robert smiled.
“You’re protective.””
“Yes.””
“Because you know you have nothing without this house.””
That sentence would have hurt once.
Not anymore.
Because I finally understood something.
People like Robert believed possessions created power.
They didn’t understand that love created strength.
I picked up the folder he brought.
“Do you really think my father didn’t prepare for this?””
Robert’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
I noticed.
Thomas noticed too.
I opened the folder.
Inside were legal arguments.
Claims.
Challenges.
And responses.
My father had already planned for this.
Every move.
Every attack.
Every person who might come after us.
Thomas smiled faintly.
“Richard was always three steps ahead.””
Robert’s jaw tightened.
“You think this is over?””
“No,” I said.
“I think it’s finally beginning.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Olivia…”
I turned.
“No.””
He stopped.
“I don’t want explanations anymore.””
His face fell.
“I made a mistake.””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“But mistakes don’t look like watching your son cry while you drink wine.””
Daniel had no answer.
Robert picked up his folder.
“This family will not be humiliated by a woman who married into it.””
I stared at him.
“A woman who married into it?””
I walked toward the dining room.
The broken plates were still gone, but the memory remained.
“My son was humiliated because you all believed we didn’t belong.””
I turned back.
“Now you’re learning the truth.””
Robert narrowed his eyes.
“What truth?””
I smiled.
“That this house never made us part of your family.””
I touched the wall.
“My father built something better.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Robert, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“The trust contains one final clause.””
Robert froze.
“What clause?””
Thomas looked at me.
Then at Noah.
“The mansion cannot be transferred, sold, or controlled by anyone who attempts to remove Olivia or Noah from the property.””
Robert’s face changed.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Thomas continued.
“And there is one more condition.””
My heart raced.
“What condition?””
Thomas opened the final page.
“The trust names a successor guardian.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Guardian?””
I looked at Noah.
Why would my father need a guardian?
Thomas read the name.
And my entire world stopped.
Because the person my father chose to protect Noah if anything happened to me…
was someone I never expected.
Someone who had been watching this family for years.
Someone who knew every secret.
Someone who had been waiting for the right moment to reveal the truth.
Thomas looked toward the doorway.
“She’s here.””
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Holding an old photograph of my father.
And when she spoke her name, Evelyn’s face lost all color.
“I think it’s time Olivia knows why her father never trusted this family.””
Her voice trembled.
“My name is Clara Bennett.””
My breath caught.
Because Bennett was my father’s last name.
May you like
And I had never heard of her before.
Until now.
