Chapter 8: The Dead Man's Name Was on the Door
Eleanor refused to answer another question until we were seated.
She locked the garage door, checked the windows, and called her office manager.
"Janice," she said, "I need you to check the access log for the last six months. Every entry. Every after-hours visit.""
She listened.
"Yes, including mine.""
A pause.
"Don't discuss this with anyone.""
She ended the call.
Daniel looked at her.
"Who is supposed to be dead?""
Eleanor placed her phone on the workbench.
"Franklin Mercer.""
I stared at her.
"Franklin is dead?""
"That's what the records say.""
"When did he die?""
"Two years ago.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Then who was at the bank?""
"Steven, according to the updated identification.""
"Why did you say someone who was supposed to be dead had a key to your office?""
Eleanor looked uncomfortable.
"Because Franklin's access credentials were never fully deactivated.""
I frowned.
"How is that possible?""
"His firm merged with mine shortly before his reported death. He retained a temporary access arrangement during the transition. I believed those credentials had been disabled.""
"Who told you he was dead?""
"His former business partner.""
I shook my head.
"You're telling me you accepted a death without seeing a death certificate?""
Eleanor lowered her eyes.
"I saw a copy.""
"An original?""
"No.""
Patricia let out a disbelieving breath.
"Good heavens.""
Eleanor looked at her.
"I know how this sounds.""
"It sounds like someone has been using your office to steal from your clients.""
Eleanor didn't argue.
Daniel walked toward the garage door.
"I'm going to find Vanessa.""
I immediately stood.
"No.""
"Mom, she knows something.""
"And you are not going to confront her.""
"She has been lying to me!""
"That doesn't mean you should walk into another confrontation.""
He looked at me.
"She's my wife.""
"And I'm your mother. Neither relationship gives you permission to behave recklessly.""
Daniel stopped.
For a moment, I saw the old anger rising in him.
Then he looked down.
"You're right.""
Eleanor checked her phone again.
"Detective Lawson wants us at the station tomorrow morning. Until then, I suggest nobody contact Vanessa or Steven.""
I nodded.
But I had a different concern.
The original trust agreement.
Robert had hidden a backup recording and left a letter warning me about Steven.
If someone had accessed Eleanor's office, they might have obtained the original document.
I turned toward her.
"Did you have the original trust agreement?""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
"In a locked archive cabinet at my office.""
"Is it still there?""
Eleanor hesitated.
"I don't know.""
My stomach tightened.
"Then you need to check.""
She nodded.
"I'll go now.""
"I want to come with you.""
"Margaret, I don't think that's wise.""
"Someone has already entered my house. They have used my identity, my son's identity, and Patricia's identity. I am not going to sit here waiting for another surprise.""
Eleanor studied me.
Then she nodded.
"All right. But Detective Lawson needs to know where we're going.""
We arrived at Eleanor's office shortly after six.
The building occupied the second floor of an old brick structure downtown.
A receptionist's desk stood near the entrance.
The lights were off.
Eleanor used her key.
The door opened.
"Janice?"" she called.
No answer.
She turned on the lights.
The office looked normal.
The waiting chairs were in place.
The reception desk was tidy.
A stack of unopened mail sat beside the printer.
But as we walked toward her private office, I noticed something strange.
The door was slightly open.
Eleanor stopped.
"I locked this before leaving yesterday.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Maybe someone came in today.""
"Janice was supposed to be here until five.""
Eleanor pushed the door.
It opened with a soft creak.
Her desk drawers were open.
Papers lay scattered across the floor.
The filing cabinet stood unlocked.
And the archive cabinet was empty.
I felt my heart pound.
"Robert's documents?""
Eleanor hurried toward the cabinet.
"The original trust agreement is gone.""
Daniel picked up a sheet from the floor.
"What about these?""
Eleanor looked at it.
It was a photocopy of a bank statement.
The same account number appeared at the top.
The account Robert had opened before Daniel was born.
I reached for the paper.
"Why is this here?""
Eleanor took it.
"Because someone was searching for information about the original account.""
I looked around.
"Was anything else taken?""
She checked the shelves.
"Two client files. A backup drive. And my old case notes.""
Patricia stood near the doorway.
"Whoever did this knew exactly what they wanted.""
Eleanor nodded.
Then Daniel noticed something on the wall.
A small photograph had been removed from its frame.
He picked up the frame.
"Mom.""
I turned.
It was a photograph of Robert, Eleanor, and Franklin Mercer standing outside the courthouse.
The photograph had been taken years earlier.
But someone had written on the back.
The original was never destroyed.
I looked at Eleanor.
"What original?""
She took the frame from Daniel.
Her hands began to tremble.
"The original beneficiary agreement.""
"Didn't Robert sign it?""
"Yes.""
"Then why would anyone destroy it?""
Eleanor looked toward the empty cabinet.
"Because the copy in the estate file was not the complete agreement.""
I stared at her.
"Explain.""
She sat down.
"Four years ago, after Robert discovered the unauthorized withdrawals, he changed the beneficiary structure. But he didn't simply amend the trust.""
"Then what did he do?""
"He created a separate irrevocable arrangement that transferred ownership of certain assets to an independent trustee.""
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"It means those assets could not be accessed by you, your mother, Vanessa, or Steven without meeting specific conditions.""
"What conditions?""
Eleanor opened her briefcase and removed a thin folder.
"Robert wanted the money protected from anyone attempting to obtain it through coercion, fraud, or manipulation.""
I looked at her.
"Who was the independent trustee?""
Eleanor paused.
Then she answered.
"Franklin Mercer.""
I felt a chill.
"But Robert fired him.""
"From the original estate representation, yes. But he retained Franklin as the independent trustee under the separate arrangement.""
Daniel looked confused.
"Why would Dad trust a man he suspected of sharing information with Steven?""
Eleanor nodded slowly.
"That's exactly what I couldn't understand.""
She opened the folder.
Inside was a photocopy of a document bearing Robert's signature.
It named Franklin Mercer as trustee.
But there was something unusual.
The signature date was October 20.
The same date as Robert's final recording.
I stared at it.
"Could this be genuine?""
Eleanor examined the page.
"I don't know. I need to compare it with the original.""
I looked toward the empty cabinet.
"Which someone has stolen.""
"Yes.""
Suddenly, Daniel's phone rang.
Vanessa.
He stared at the screen.
Eleanor shook her head.
"Don't answer.""
Daniel hesitated.
Then the phone stopped.
A message appeared.
I know you're with your mother. We need to talk before you make another mistake.
Daniel showed us the message.
A second message arrived.
Steven says the documents are already gone. There's nothing your mother can do.
I looked at Eleanor.
"She knows we've found the missing documents.""
Eleanor nodded.
"Or someone is watching the office.""
Patricia moved toward the window.
She looked down at the street.
A black SUV was parked across the road.
The engine was running.
"Margaret," she whispered.
I joined her.
The driver was difficult to see through the tinted glass.
Then the passenger door opened.
A man stepped out.
He looked up toward our window.
Even from the second floor, I recognized him.
Steven.
He raised one hand.
Not a greeting.
A warning.
Then he walked toward the building.
Eleanor immediately locked the office door.
"Everyone stay away from the windows.""
Daniel grabbed a heavy desk ornament.
Patricia took out her phone.
I stood motionless.
The footsteps approached.
One floor.
Then another.
Then they stopped outside the office.
A key entered the lock.
Eleanor whispered, "Nobody move.""
The handle turned.
Once.
Twice.
Then a voice came through the door.
"Margaret, I know you're in there.""
Steven.
He knocked gently.
"Open the door. We need to talk.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Go away!""
Steven laughed.
"Daniel, don't make this harder than it needs to be.""
Eleanor raised her phone.
"Steven Hayes, we're contacting the police.""
"Go ahead.""
A pause.
Then he spoke again.
"Margaret, your husband left something for you. Something you were never supposed to find.""
I stared at the door.
"What?""
"The original account records.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
Steven continued.
"Robert didn't just hide money before Daniel was born. He hid the truth about where Daniel came from.""
Daniel went still.
I looked at Eleanor.
She slowly turned toward me.
Then Steven said:
"Ask your mother why Robert agreed to raise another man's child.""
Daniel dropped the desk ornament.
It hit the floor with a loud crack.
"That's a lie!"" he shouted.
Steven's voice became colder.
"Then ask her why Dad paid a man named Thomas Reed every month for twenty years.""
I couldn't breathe.
Thomas Reed.
The name struck me like a memory returning from a place I had buried.
I had known Thomas.
Before Robert.
Before Daniel.
Before the house in Ohio.
But I hadn't heard that name in decades.
Daniel turned toward me.
"Mom?""
I opened my mouth.
Nothing came out.
Steven knocked again.
"Open the door, Margaret. You deserve to know the truth.""
Eleanor grabbed my arm.
"Don't.""
Then the office lights went out.
A loud crash sounded in the hallway.
Someone screamed.
And when the emergency lights came on, the office door stood open.
Steven was gone.
So was the brown envelope containing the photocopy of Robert's final agreement.
Daniel looked around wildly.
"Where did he go?""
Patricia ran toward the hallway.
I stayed where I was.
Because I had noticed something on the floor.
A small white card.
It had fallen from Steven's jacket.
I picked it up.
There was an address written on the back.
May you like
And beneath it, in Robert's handwriting, were the words:
Thomas Reed. Ask him what happened on the night Daniel was born.
