Chapter 2: The Envelope Nobody Expected
The room felt smaller.
That was the only way I could describe it.
Like the walls had moved closer while everyone waited for Dad to speak.
He held the envelope between his fingers.
Not opening it.
Just staring at it.
The name written across the front was enough to change his expression.
“Mia,” he said quietly.
She didn’t answer.
“Mia.””
Her eyes moved toward him.
“Yes?””
Dad held up the envelope.
“Why is this in your bag?””
She immediately looked at Mom.
It was quick.
Almost invisible.
But Dad saw it.
I saw it too.
And suddenly, I understood something.
They had a conversation without saying a word.
Dad’s voice became colder.
“Why did you look at your mother?””
Mia crossed her arms.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
“You do.””
Mom stepped forward.
“David, this is not the time.””
Dad turned toward her.
“Then tell me when the time is.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Dad looked back at the envelope.
“What is this?””
Mia’s confidence was gone.
“It’s private.””
I almost laughed.
Private.
The same girl who had just destroyed my most important possession was suddenly asking for privacy.
Dad noticed the irony too.
“Private?””
He looked at the scissors.
Then the dress.
“Your sister’s graduation dress is destroyed, and you’re worried about privacy?””
Mia looked away.
I sat there quietly, still holding the torn fabric.
I wanted answers.
But I was afraid of them.
Because whatever was inside that envelope had scared Mia.
And Mia was not someone who scared easily.
Growing up, she had always been the fearless one.
The charming one.
The one who could cry and get forgiveness within seconds.
If she broke something, people said she was young.
If I made a mistake, people said I should know better.
But now she looked like a child caught doing something she couldn’t explain.
Dad slowly opened the envelope.
Mom rushed forward.
“David, don’t.””
He stopped.
Not because he was listening.
Because he was shocked she tried to stop him.
“Why shouldn’t I?””
Mom’s face changed.
“Because you don’t understand.””
Dad stared at her.
“Then explain.””
She didn’t.
That silence said more than words could.
Dad pulled out the paper inside.
His eyes moved across the page.
I watched his face.
The anger faded.
Confusion replaced it.
Then something close to disbelief.
“What is this?””
Mia whispered.
“Dad…”
He looked up.
“No. Answer me.””
She didn’t.
Dad held the paper tighter.
“Is this real?””
My stomach twisted.
“What is it?”” I asked.
Everyone looked at me.
For a second, nobody spoke.
Then Dad slowly handed me the paper.
I looked down.
It was a letter.
At the top was a company name I recognized.
Not because I knew the company.
Because I had seen Mia talking about it for weeks.
A luxury fashion brand.
My eyes moved lower.
And then I saw a number.
A payment amount.
My breath caught.
“Three thousand dollars?””
Mia immediately reached for it.
Dad pulled it away.
“Explain.””
“It’s not what you think.””
“Then what is it?””
Mia looked at Mom.
Again.
Dad noticed.
“Stop looking at her.””
Mia’s face tightened.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She didn’t answer.
Dad laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“After the money was spent?””
I looked between them.
“What’s happening?””
Nobody responded.
Then Dad looked at me.
And I saw something in his eyes.
Regret.
“Emma…”
The way he said my name made me nervous.
“What?””
He looked down at the letter.
Then back at me.
“There’s something you need to know.””
Mia stepped forward.
“No.””
Dad ignored her.
“Emma, that dress…”
I tightened my grip on the torn fabric.
“What about my dress?””
Dad looked at Mom.
And Mom looked away.
“The reason Mia destroyed it…”
He stopped.
My heart started beating faster.
“Dad?””
He took a breath.
“The reason she destroyed it is because she knew something about that dress.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Mia’s voice suddenly became desperate.
“Dad, please.””
But Dad continued.
“Emma, where did you buy that dress?””
I looked confused.
“Online. From a designer resale site.””
“Did you check the label?””
I stared at him.
“The label?””
“Yes.””
“No. Why?””
Dad looked at the dress pieces on the floor.
Then at the envelope.
Then at Mia.
And I saw the realization hit him.
“Because I don’t think Mia destroyed your dress because she hated it.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Then why?””
Dad picked up one of the torn pieces.
Examining the inside seam.

And then he said something that made Mia cover her mouth.
“She was trying to stop you from finding out what was sewn inside.””
